Hi everyone,

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow morning, but I was hoping I might get some advice before then. My female guinea pig Angel has had a strong fishy smell coming from her cage the past few days. After washing the covers several times we have noticed that the smell was coming directly from her. Today I have picked her up to check her and noticed a cloudy coloured discharge which seems to be the source of the smell. I tried to take a photo of this but most of it came off in my hand :vom:. Does this kind of discharge usually accompany a UTI?

I was also wondering if you all thought her.. lady parts look normal? I looked at some photos of other pigs parts and noticed hers is mostly covered by the flap of skin over the top. Is this normal? Or could she be swollen?
She lost her cage mate this past week so i'm concerned she has become ill due to stress if this is at all possible.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi!

Please have her seen by a vet as soon as possible. This is not normal and cannot wait for long as any advanced stages may be fatal.
The problem is likely located in the reproductive tract. It could be pyometra (infection of the womb lining) or point to a burst ovarian cyst. Either issue is serious. Of course I can only guess and not replace a proper vet examination; it can well be something else.

I am so sorry for your loss and that you are having such a rough time! it can be just a coincidence; they happen, too.

:agr: she needs an urgent vet trip. It’s most likely something nasty going on in the reproductive tract and should not be left.

Oh no I really hope my girl isn't in any sort of pain, she is so good at hiding things from us. I've got her on loxicom and will call the vet as soon as they open tomorrow morning, that is unless anything changes and I have to get her in the emergency vet. Thank you for your responses! It has been a rough week losing our other girl Sweet pea, I couldn't bear anything else happening.

Please get her into an emergency vet. the sooner she is put on a strong antibiotic, the greater her chance of survival.

Okay, I will start calling around my local vets now. Unfortunately the out of hours places here aren't so knowledgable about pigs but hopefully someone will see her asap.

Hi everyone, thanks for all of your comments. Just thought id give a quick update. Angel has an infection in her uterus and ovarian cysts on both sides. She is now on a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection and get her strength up before the vet does an operation to remove everything. She is still cheerful and eating lots but I will be keeping a close eye on her and hopefully she'll be back to normal within a few weeks 🤞 x

All the best! Glad that you could have her seen promptly and be able to save her life! Thank you for the update.
