Hi there,

We have a tradition in our family that our sows have names beginning with the same letter. Our previous pair where Belle and Bonnie. Both B names meaning 'Beautiful' in different languages.

We are picking up a new friend for our sow Petal today and need a 'P' name to match. She is an agouti and tan crested girl who seems to have been a bit of a runt. I'm told she was hand fed for weeks and is still tiny. So Petal needs her friend to have a 'P' name, ideally something botanical to match hers but it's not essential.

Names we've considered so far but would love opinions on are:
1) Polly - short for Pollen
2) Pickle - husband hates it cause he thinks it's a boy's name (haha)
3) Petunia/ Pansy - fits with the theme but we don't like them so much
4) Pea - because she's little.
5) Peanut - because of her colouring.

The ones I thought of have been mentioned, but I’ll add them in for weight.
Poppy
Penelope
Pearl
Peony
Piper

I also thought of Pansy, Pippa, Peace, Passion, Pigsqueak, Periwinkle, Plantain, Pear.

My first thought was Poppy, which I see several other people have suggested. I also like Pippa and Pipkin :)

I love theme names! I thing Poppy will go well with the p theme and the flower theme. I'm kinda into the word Pink too as Pink and Petal could sound like a lovely pair!

On a side note, someone on the fishkeeping forum had a little pink fish named Petal. He said he only got it because of his girlfriend, but he really became fond of sassy little Petal as it had the most personality.

I had a Petal Pig once, and a Pickle Pig.
I do like P names just because they go so well with Pig. I like Peanut best from your shortlist.

Had you thought about Prudence?

Peppa Pig or Pingu

I've had a Pili Pala (Welsh for Butterfly) and her cousin Papi (Poppy).

Pauline or Paulette
Petra or Petronilla
Prudence
Prunella
Prisca
Philomena (Beloved in Greek)
Philomela (Greek for Nightingale, 'Lover of Songs' - good name for a vocal piggy!)

The only one I can think of that's not been mentioned is Pamela. I had an agouti boar named Peanut.

If you want another plant part, Pistil would be a P ... I'm guessing Petiole would be too close to Petal. A Pome is a type of fruit such as an apple, pear, or quince ... or spell it Pomme, and it's the French word for apple. Panicle (Pan) is a multi-branched inflorescence. Pepo is a fruit that contains a lot of seeds, like a pumpkin, which brings me to the next thought: Pepita. If you like Pickle but your husband doesn't, perhaps Prickle, though would be better for an abyssinian than a crested.
