Fergie Has Been Hyperventilating For 6 Weeks

That looks about right. Mine are on a dose of between 1.25mg and 1.75mg a day of Benazapril but the dose is split in 2.

I am not sure about whether sedation is any better than a GA and would still think a conscious xray would be less risky but the vet must have their reasons for wanting to sedate him.

The vet & I chatted for a while about the risks & I'm content that the smaller risk of sedation (as compared to GA) is worth the additional information that clear x-rays from 2 aspects will give. She explained that, as sedation is a muscle relaxant as opposed to a nervous-system administration, it shouldn't have a tremendously detrimental affect even if it is heart. That said, she was candid that these things can never be certain but, based on today's consult, there's no reason to expect a negative outcome.

Hubby, however, thinks Fergie's not going to survive sedation & it's putting doubt in my mind!

What I do know, is that we cannot leave him as he is. And it's time-critical so our options are getting less palatable. Fingers crossed that I'm not on here tomorrow giving bad news. Feel a sleepless night coming on...

That's good that the vet was able to explain that to you, hope it gets you the images needed to work out what is wrong. How much does he weigh? Is there any way they could try conscious first and only sedate if absolutely necessary?

He weighs 838g & that's a good suggestion about plan a before plan b Helen, thanks. I'll make sure they understand my concerns & instruct them likewise.

Fergie has liquid Frusol (0.2ml twice daily) & Baytril (0.4ml twice daily) til Monday when we take him back for a look-see. He's fairly chipper & didn't object too much to it, eating his post-medicine basil (to take the taste away) with only a little persuasion. The xray showed increased shading in the chest which, they explained, is either tissue or fluid. May be enlarged heart or pneumonia.

I wonder if I'm imagining it but Fergie's brother Bumble seems to be showing similar early signs *sigh* so maybe take him too fgs!

Thank you for all your help x

Glad the xray went ok, if it is Pneumonia then it is possible that his brother could get it so I agree best to get him checked too.

Hopefully the Frusol will help. As he is on Baytril do you have probiotics too? These should be given at least an hour after each dose to help stabilise the gut.

Zithromax is also a good antibiotic for Pneumonia (not sure if I mentioned that earlier or not).

Hi Helen. thanks for the antibiotic advice. I bought some probiotic following your advice on another thread & waited til an hour after his meds. It's Pets At Home Pro C & they both seem to like it. This is Fergie's breakfast spread of Frusol followed by Baytril, a helping of basil (eaten by this stage!) with a side order of celery. Biccies and water for pudding if required.

His breathing as he lies in my lap here, is much easier & almost no discernable noise at all. You can still see his sides "panting" but things do seem to be getting easier. I'm watching Bumble like a hawk & will ask the vet on Monday. If I see any signs at all though, I'll have him sharing Fergie's Baytril before he breathes out! In fact hubby is, this very moment, rigging up piggy-cam to feed my unhealthy obsession.

I only got guinea pigs because I was told they're such easy yet loving pets. Lol

That's great that his breathing seems better, diuretic really can save lives. He's gorgeous, looks a bit like my Millie Moo.

It is great that his breathing is getting better with the frusol. I found it very effective with my Tegyd, much more than frusemide.
