I bathed her about 3 weeks ago with tea tree shampoo which was fine and I brush her every other day, but she is still really itchy and scratchy, especially at her back where she can't get too. her skins all flaky and stuff.

I will probably bath her at the weekend, but does anyone recommend some hardcore non-chemical itchy scalp shampoo. I odnt want her to be aggravated or hurt herself. :'(

Personally I would take her to the vet. It could be mites or a fungal infection or both. They don't get flaky skin without a reason.

Was it a specially formulated guinea pig shampoo you used on her? Tea tree in human shampoos is very, very strong so you need to be careful as it's not suitable for guineas.

I would also contact Chrissie at www.gorgeousguineas.com.

hmmmm, well she had itchy skin when I got her, I think its because shes rough hair and i think its something shes always had, Yeah i might contact her and see what shes suggests, it was a special small animal tea tree shampoo.

I have three rough haired pigs and they dont excessively scratch so it could be mites, with it being on her rump I'm inclined to think it is mites and a trip to the vet is probably needed.

Good luck I hope Fergie is ok. :)

Have you checked for running lice, part the hair and look to see if there are any little white/cream things about 2mm - 3mm trying to escape from the light, I use a torch as they show up easier tying to escape the hair, I use this on all my pigs.
GG products are worth every penny, I got nits off a kid and once wash and they were dead and gone.

Flora had lice too and GG worked wonders.

Any scabs on Fergies back?

Another vote here for gorgeous guineas. I have my first pigs ever (8 months old now). They both had lice just before xmas, emailled Chrissie on the recomendation of this site, she was really helpful.

Coco-neme mask and lice and easy or whatever it's called shampoo.
2 applications, no lice since but the stuff is in the fridge in case it is ever needed again - you get loads for your money.

I agree with the others, either mites, lice or fungal. Vet visit needed for mites, ask for xeno 450 topical rather than injection. GG do a lice n easy shampoo if you see lice or a coco neem melt and manuka and neem shampoo for fungal. Email her fist with pics if possible :)

Hi Clare,

When Cuzzy had mites he had a couple of open sores on his rump that had scabbed over. Caused by too much scratching. Could be an argument over the pigloo but I know Cuzzy wasn't that itchy and I didn't consider mites it was only when I was going through his fur I realised there was a problem.

Hi Charlotte,

Thanks for your email and the pigture of your lovely piggy:)

For dry, itchy skin the best two products to use together are the CocoNeem Melt followed by the Manuka & Neem Shampoo. After a couple of applications you should see a big difference.

Also, can you please let me know what type of bedding you keep your piggies on and how often you clean them out?

I hope this helps.

Best wishes, Chrissie

I think I will try some good shampoo, if that doesnt work I will go to the vets, I wanna eliminate everything first :) thanks for the help guys
