I have a few concerns about both my girls unfortunately!
I will start with Daisy..
Last night I noticed milky fluid in one of Daisy's eyes that disappeared as quick as it came so I assumed it was cleaning fluid. I just watched her clean herself and the same eye had the white fluid again but the eye still looks wet and she the lay down relaxing but her eyes were closed (she sometimes closes her eyes to sleep but this was different). She's now at the hay and the eye looks fine. Unsure if it's the start of something or just being paranoid?

Now Maple..
She has started looking slightly puffed up at times and there are a few odd shaped poops in the cage which I'm really sure are hers. She is still eating and was keen for her veg although I only gave her a small amount. Her tummy felt a bit hard. When she is moving around she is not fluffed up. Only when she's sitting still. She is happily munching a toilet roll tube but I'm worried something is going on with her gut!

What do you guys think? I am planning on phoning the vet first thing tomorrow morning and hopefully get an appt!
 
Is it possible to post a photo of Daisy's eye? is there a chance she could have a piece of hay stuck in it? or has had a hay poke?

I too am wondering if Maple may have a bit of gas or some disturbance in her gut. Does she usually eat toilet roll tubes or is it a recent development that ties in with the symptoms? if the gut is disturbed pigs tend to like things with extra fibre like cardboard. Can you post a photo of the odd poos?

If you are worried I would get them both checked, even if just for your peace of mind.
 
I haven't taken a photo of Daisy's eye as it is back to normal now. She has had a hay poke in the past where her eye was twitchy and upon inspection I could see a little bit of hay. Her eye is not twitching this time though and I can't see anything in it. I gave it a clean with cool boiled water. It just seems to come and go.

I usually always have a bit of toilet roll tube in the cage which they both tend to nibble on but I think she may be doing it more than usual. Just recently Maple did this poo..


I have given her 3ml water with probiotic and I will definitely be phoning the vets tomorrow. Just hope I get an appt as they are only open until 12pm
 
I agree that the poo is not normal, shows that her gut transit is affected and the fact she is eating cardboard too. I would stress to them that she needs seeing as a priority with it being a bank holiday (easier said than done I know).

The eye sounds like cleaning fluid then, maybe she produces a bit more than normal, my Katie is like that. I would keep an eye out for any laboured breathing, sneezing or runny nose.

Thanks for that, didn't realise it was a bank holiday! I will certainly insist that she is seen tomorrow. I will take both of them to get them both checked over.
 
Just back from vet (not a particularly cavy savvy one unfortunately) she says Maple most likely just a has a sensitive gut as this has happened to her before and to continue with probiotic.

She said the conjunctiva in Daisy's right eye was pinker than the left eye so gave me some eye drops. She also said that if the eye drops don't help then it may be a problem with the teeth causing the eye problem. She did have a look at her teeth but said they were full of food so couldn't get a right look.
 
That's not a very helpful vet! Mine always flush out the mouth with water to get a look at the teeth. Sorry that you didn't get any clear answers. Perhaps if things aren't desperate you could think about finding a more cavy savvy vet for a second opinion?

I do have another cavy savvy vet that I am registered with but he is over an hour away so often use the one closer to home for smaller problems (as I did not think it would have anything to do with teeth!) Maple also gets freaked out travelling so that's why I went to this one :(

Daisy has just recovered from ear infection (treated by cavy savvy vet) so I wonder if the eye could have anything to do with that is it was the right ear causing problems and now the right eye :/
 
It is definitely a possibility, could you give them a call on Tuesday and discuss over the phone as they will know her history?

How are Maple's poos today? Some pigs do have a sensitive gut, has she eaten anything new?

Yes I will give the cavy savvy vet a call. He will probably be fed up of me by now after the ear infection! Haha.

Maple's poops are very soft today so no more veg for her. She hasn't had anything new. I started giving them grass and dandelions a few weeks ago but just a small handful every other day between the two of them. I know dandelions can cause diarrhoea but she only had 1 or 2 every other day :/
 
Ok so I just seen Daisy clean herself and checked her eye once she'd finished. The white stuff was there again so now I'm really thinking it is just cleaning fluid. I managed to get a quick photo before it disappeared but it's not great as she was munching on some hay. The white stuff has gone again now.
