Hey!

Just wondering if anyone tried the Protum probiotic paste instead of Fibreplex? I am not sure if I can add links, but Amazon sells Protum for piggies.

I noticed when my piggie was on meds couple of months ago the fibreplex has changed and is now so difficult to get piggie to eat... Two separate boxes had strange consistency and piggie just spat it out. Had to dissolve in 1ml of water to get it to better consistency and even then seems like the taste is off? Restocking my fist aid kit and came across Protum on amazon instead of Fibreplex and wondered if anyone tried it?

I've brought the Protum and it seems to be more targeted towards loose poops and has added probiotics. Also only recommend for 3 days and water intake needs topping up after use. Don't think I would use this as probiotic like Fibreplex cause it seems like it could constipate piggie with normal poops?PXL_20250804_194206328.webpPXL_20250804_194216535.webpPXL_20250804_194227061.webp

Fibreplex for comparison:

Sounds like we're stuck with weird Fibreplex. Oxbow digestive support ingredients don't seem to have any added probiotics, other than one root that's natural probiotic.

There are other types of probiotics but it depends on the digestive problem and how much extra fibre piggy needs. Viovet have their own brand version of Fibreplex but it's not in stock at the moment. I tried that one it was a little greasier than Fibreplex. I mix it with syringe food to make it more palatable and I found the Viovet one make the syringe greasy and was harder to wash out. Other than that it was a good alternative.
I am using some Fibreplex that I bought recently and I've not noticed it's any different. Brillo's still fighting the syringe and refusing to have it without a lot of coaxing!

Didn't realise violet did their own type, shame I missed it. It's getting ridiculously overpriced. We'll be relying on poop soup!
I just keep tub of it on hand along with CC etc.

It has got very expensive! I keep a tub of pro C in as well as a tube of Fibreplex. Last time I had a piggy on ABs the vet told me to use both. I sometimes find Fibreplex on ebay in packs of 3 which works out a lot cheaper but obviously only if it's going to get used. I do find with 8 guinea pigs I use it before it goes out of date.

Is the pro c any good? Thought it's not going to be as effective? But guessing it's easier to add by sprinkling on food/veggie.
I once had CC that had couple months shelf life from Amazon. I did end up donating it. But other than that everything has at least 1yr shelf life. Can't believe imported Emeraid is now cheaper than CC!
Have you ever used the oxbow treats for digestion? I used to use the urinary and joint ones. But those actually had ingredients that would be in other supplements. So I was surprised their digestive ones don't.

The pro C is recommended by my vet as one of the best, it's not recommended for long term use because of the glucose but is fine for the time they are on ABs. I mix it with water and syringe it, or if they are on syringe food I mix it in that.
I don't use anything from Oxbow, it's so overpriced and I don't think their biscuit type things have a very high dose of useful ingredients. Two of my oldies have arthritis and take Johnson's 4 Joints liquid the glucosamine is higher than the Oxbow treat. My vet recommends (and sells!) Science Selective recovery, I used to use that but the price has got prohibitive now. I did try CC a couple of times but no piggy I've ever tried it on would eat it without a fight and I can't stand the smell. I mostly use the Burgess recovery food, it comes as pellets if it gets near date I mix them in with their normal pellets and use them up that way. If I have a piggy on recovery food for sometime I use Emeraid as a boredom breaker but most I tried with it didn't seem to like it although I did have two that seemed to love it.

Pro c is absolutely fine but as above, I wouldn’t use it long term.
Don’t forget that live microbiome transfer (poop soup) is easily accessible and effective for a digestion issue, and of course it’s free!

I also wouldn’t use the oxbow supplement treats.
