Hi,

On Monday Fifi had finished her five days worth of Metacam.

Me and the vet think it is more likely that she has injured herself, by banging her toe against something. Unfortunately her toe is still swollen, the toe as you can see has scabbed over, but is still swollen.

It doesn't appear broken to the vet, or infected. Fifi is eating, drinking, walking and her mood is normal.

Her toe doesn't seem to really bother her, and she shows no signs of itching.

After finishing the metacam, I have been cleaning her toe in a saline solution, and putting a little manuka honey on it for 30 minutes in hope it may help the healing process. I read that manuka honey is antibacteria, antibiotic, antiseptic, so I thought it might be worth a try. Obviously washing it off before I place her back in the cage.

The vet has said an xray maybe needed. It is quite expensive to have one. I'm a bit low on funds at the moment and can't afford the xray. I would preferably like to just like to get the treatment for her foot to make it better and this is where I need advice on what I should ask for at the vets.

The vet I saw is quite piggy savy but unfortunately is a bit far/expensive to travel too, and I would like to see someone more local, as it's easier to get too, less stressful on fifi for traveling and would cost less.

As she has already had an anti inflammatory (metacam).

Judging by her foot what would be the best treatment for her toe at this stage? Maybe an antibiotic ?

As I don't know how savy the vet is with guinea pigs, as I've never seen them before. It would be helpful to have advice on potential treatment and, dosages, she would need so I am prepared and have an idea what to ask for.

Also advice on medicines that should accompany and medicines that need to be avoided would be helpful.

Thanks

Do you have a vet called Easi-Pet vets if you have one close ring them & see if they are a Savvy vet. I have a brilliant vet very good with piggies & they are half the price.

I would think an antibiotic should be the next step as it could be infected. Does it feel warm at all? I would also keep going with the Metacam to treat any inflammation.

Thanks for your reply.

I just checked the toe and it doesn't feel any warmer then her other normal toes. Although it was warm at first but she had been sitting in her snuggle sack :))

It is rather hard to touch though.

It's funny I was in the middle of writing this post and the vet I saw last week called me, she has been great. She has advised me to carry on with the metacam for 5 days, if there us no improvement baytril could be the next option and an xray could give further insight, I have had a lot of the most important questions answered. Plus I may have funds for the xray after 5 days. :D
