I have two guinea pigs and one has always been sort of aggressive. I’ve had them for a few months and today I realized that the aggressive one ripped my others ear in half. What should I do?

Are you sure the other piggies’ eat wasnt ripped before you got him/her?

Are they male/female? How old are they? How big is their cage? What behaviour have you noticed?

It’s hard to say as you haven’t really given any info apart from that one is aggressive. It may not necessarily be aggressiveness you’re seeing, but dominance behaviour. It’s a case of personalities matching which will lead to a good bond. Have a read of the thread I’ve linked below to see normal dominance behaviour.

It has fresh blood on it so it’s recent for sure. They are both males and I got them as babies and I’ve had them for probably about 5 months. Their cage is two stories so I don’t think size is a problem and I have noticed that they chase each other around a lot. He has gotten better and not done it as much but the aggressive one used to try to hump my other but I think that may be part of the dominance behavior you mentioned. I have learned that they were in a fence in my yard with my mom and a dog came and tipped the fence so I think it may have been from the fence getting flipped and it might have caught his ear. Thank you for your help!

Humping and chasing isn’t being aggressive, it’s part of the dominance behaviour.

your boys have now started the teenage phase. This goes on from 4 to 14 months, with a few hormone surges occurring during that time (the first being at seven months of age).

Piggies are ground roaming animals so I’m afraid that additional floors don’t count towards ‘space’. How big I the bottom floor of their cage? Boys need at least 150 x 60cm on one level. If your cage is less than that (one level), then you need to find a way to make it bigger. Either by linking another cage to it, buying a bigger one, or setting up a playpen to which they have 24/7 access. Space is very important when it comes to boars.

Also make sure that you have two of everything - hides, bowls etc.

PS does the one with the torn ear squeak when the other is chasing/humping him?

Okay! I will check that! And no he doesn’t really do anything. He does kind of grumble when he chases him though. He will turn and face him and sway back and fourth and grumble

Ok. Keep an eye on them then. One has to be submissive and If they’re both gunning for top spot then it could become an issue. Make sure they have the right amount of space as above. Lack of can also cause issues.
