Can I just say how grateful I am for discovering threads on here about people filtering water for their guinea pigs. It's one of those things I never would have thought of myself and since I live in a hard water area it's made such a significant difference to one of my girls Squeak who since having a UTI last November has always had a more sensitive bladder. I even moved her onto a low in calcium diet and grain free pellets and she was still having cloudy urine and occasional traces of blood in her urine when tested by my vet.

However since changing to filtered water her urine is now clear and back to normal. It's amazing what a difference it's made. So to anyone who has a piggie with bladder issues I would definitely recommend purchasing a water filter, it can make all the difference! 😊

Glad that the filtered water has helped! It has made the difference between stones and none with my own piggies, too; but then we live in the same wider area...

We recommend it very much in our comprehensive diet guide as hard water is the largest contributor of calcium, followed by pellets (hence we recommend to feed only 1 tablespoon per piggy per day whatever the brand) long before any veg, even high calcium kale.
Please don't go zero calcium as that is not good either. Magnesium and vitamin C are both tied with higher calcium veg but by taking the water and pellets much more out of the equation you have a bit more leeway with your veg.

It's definitely not a zero calcium diet but yes I agree with you, now the water has helped so much it gives me a bit more freedom with veg choices. 😊

I actually can't believe how cheap the filter jugs are. £10 from Argos, what a bargain!

Shows how much difference it can make then if you aren't even in a hard water area and it still helped! 😊
 
I use a wilko one myself. Cheapest for new filters.

Seems as this thread relates to calcium. Do any of you think that parsnip, if fed everyday could cause bladder issues? Also high oxolate veg and possibly soy from pellets and not just calcium?

They have a universal filter if I remembered correctly. Get them when they are on offer from alsorts of places 👍🏻

I've heard calcium is a natural nutrient anyway
