I filter my water because of the taste but give my guinea pigs tap water. They hardly drink any (if any at all) and it's only just occurred to me that it could be because of the taste (?). Just wondered what other do in hard water areas?

I've switched to a low calcium bottled water (Tesco brand only 25p for a big bottle)
They're drinking a lot more of it. Our water is very hard and gets a lot of limescale.
 
I use filtered water for my lot too - since we have had a couple of piggies with bladder stones I thought I would try filtered water, probably grasping at straws but anything is worth a try!
 
Mine have been on filtered water for a good year or so now, I'm in East Anglia so very hard water area.

I gave them tap water a few weeks back, they barely touched it. Filtered water goes down much better with all 15 of my lot, fussy so and sos. :)
 
I will be changing to filtered water after my mum gave me tap water and filtered water and the diffrence is a lot i think,plus with buff having had stones it may also help him as i am in a hard water area x
 
Yes, am definitely going to give them filtered as I have it anyway. Don't know why I didn't think about it before. {:|
 
Hmmm, this is really interesting. For some reason I thought filtered water wasn't good for them, I must be wrong, or perhaps it was bottled?

Interesting though as I'm reducing the calcium intake due to UTI problems at the moment....hmmm might have to wipe down the Filter jug and get a new filter! We're very hard water area in Lichfield and surrounding villages.
 
I'm also in a hard water area. I've thought about giving my pigs filtered water but always forget to root around the back of the cupboards to dig out my old Brita jug which I haven't used in ages.

I seem to recall reading AP mention on here that he was sceptical about filtered tap water making any difference to pigs, in terms of health benefits (namely the prevention of stones) however I'd always think there's no harm in trying and it seems a sensible thing to do. And if it encourages them to drink more then surely that's benefit enough in itself! :)

Btw does anyone know where you can buy cheap cartridges to fit the old style "Classic" Brita filter jugs? (Doesn't have to be genuine Brita ones, suitable universal ones would do) Thanks x

I have heard that bottled mineral water isn't good for guineas but I can't remember where, why or whether it was a reliable source....(the information, not the water!) Might be duff information, not really sure.
