My piggie Desmond is an absolute filthmonger. Whilst my other pigs all wee and poo in a corner of their cages, Desmond just does his business everywhere. He is always lying in pools of wee and I have to clean his cage everyday. I am having him neutred next week :-\ and although I plan to keep him on towels, I am really worried that he might get an infection or something if he is lying in his own mess with a new wound....
Has anyone else got such a dirty pig and have you any advice on likelihood of infection?

Both my boars make such a mess in their cage! And my sow and the babies are soo clean compared to them ;D

When he is neautered you will need to keep him on clean towels and put a fresh one in daily for him :)

both my dallas and gideon are like that and gideon is terrible as his belly is white so he constantly has wee stains just change the towels regularly and it should be fine

Oh well I'm glad it isn't just mine then! He has a plastic house which he wees on and then sits in it 98) I will get a stock pile of towels ready! Thanks.
My other boar Dexter is so cute he reverses into the corner to do his business. It is so funny to watch him walking backwards.
BW- Just been looking at your new baby pics. Adorable!

I have the dirtiest pig of them all. Merlin loves to grub around in his own filth. His tummy always smells of dried wee and he needs a bath every week.

Although he makes a lot of mess, he was a rescue pig, and I'm led to believe lived in very cramped circumstances so he probably had no choice but to lie in his own wee :'(

ahhh. poor merlin! Mine is also a rescue so maybe he had the same experience. I know he wasn't ever gotten out the cage so maybe....
Just looked down now and he has his chin on a pile of poo. Have some dignity Desmond Please!

pretzel is bad for that....she had a furry pouch thing and everyday i have to tip it up so all the poo's fall out ::) and then when maggs is in it she gets all the poo in her fur...which she cant welcome! ::)

Someone told me rearranging the cage can help, but I'm doubtful tobe honest and havent tried it :)

I don't know if you will have the time (luckily my mum doesn't work so she helped when I was working) but we basically picked up the poo regularly so they couldn't be anything to lie in and changed towels if they were weed on. I think the the most critical time is for about 3-4 days afterwards but we kept him on towels for two weeks but changed less regularly.

I stocked up on 60p towels from tesco!

Rodney is the same he goes everywhere, but that is probably due to how he was housed before we got him.
He was owned by an elderly lady that kept him in a laundry basket!
He now has an 8ft x 2ft cage so he runs around all day peeing and pooing.

I'm so sorry I know thats not funny but i can imagine my nana doing something silly like that! ;D ;D

Poor dear little Merlin, lucky for him he's got you now :smitten:

Yes well Duke is a 'pig' at housecleaning too ::)
I change his main towel at least twice if not three times a day, plus his little towel that he's supposed to sit on (usually manages to climb underneath ) and during the night if i find his area very wet or dirty i change it again.
Mind you when he was small he used to wee and poo in one corner, ooo old age has caught up cause he just does not care anymore ;D ;D

Keep him as clean and dry as possible, either or towels, paper or other absorbing material that won't irritate the surgical wound (so not anything like sawdust or hay). You could clean the effected area with a salt and water solution a couple times a day. Providing you keep him as clean as possible (sitting in a small amount of wee for a small period of time won't cause an infection, not that you shouldn't try to avoid this) then you should have no problems.
