Those of you who have been on this Forum for a while may recall our sweet (?) agouti guinea pig Ruby and her bonding woes.
In the almost 5 years we have had her, Ruby has fallen out with (or just failed to bond with) between 8 - 10 guinea pigs.
It would appear that Ruby does not like babies, adults, males or females.
In fact Ruby likes one person - her devoted human slave - and no one else.
Ruby most definitely does not like me.

So I had pretty much given up the search for a companion for Ruby, until last week.
Last week just by chance I spotted Coconut.
Now sadly Coconut is not a rescue and does come from a large chain store, however she seemed to have all the qualities that a friend for Ruby would need.
She was calm, non aggressive, non confrontational and very laid back.
Not to mention that they look fairly similar. I don’t know if that makes a difference, but I wondered if Ruby would be more accepting of another piggy that looks like her?

Based on Ruby’s track record I still wasn’t sure, but we bought Coconut home anyway, and set up the bonding pen to see what would happen.
As always the bonding took place in a neutral area and the initial signs were surprisingly good.
Ruby showed very little interest in Coconut, and when she did try to bite her Coconut did not react at all.
Ruby quickly got bored and wandered off to eat hay.
After a long session in the bonding pen, we were happy that Ruby had finally accepted a new friend.
Please allow me to introduce the newly and successfully bonded Ruby and Coconut.:love:

Scroll down for the photo. :))

Well done Ruby
.... are you sure Coconut is a girl? I mean you don't want any baby Ruby's do you? ;) xx
Oh no - baby Ruby's are most certainly not on the agenda :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
As an experienced and responsible piggy owner naturally I made sure that Coconut did not have any 'boy bits' before putting them together.
Thankfully the situation was fairly clear, and I did not need to confirm this with a vet :))

Lol I thought what breed is that piggy. Of course looking on my phone it took me a second.

Wow 8-10 pigs she really is picky. Good she has her new friend now as was sounding like you’d have to just join her in the cage as her cage mate. And I heard sows typically get on well!

:lol!: What a fab match!
It know it's early days, but it does seem to be going rather well.
I suspect a small amount of barbering may have taken place, as several of Coconut's longer locks are missing, but other than that no bite marks, so I am feeling optimistic.
Who knows - now I have finally found Ruby's 'type' there may well be another companion in her near future....

Oh no. I was so excited for her!
Don't feel bad for her @flowerfairy
In addition to her new friend Coconut, she does have contact through the bars with Harry.
She is such a funny pig - she quite likes Harry occasionally and on her own terms, but overall is just much happier on her own.

I was so excited for Ruby when I started to read the thread I must confess. When I saw the picture I couldn't stop laughing. Today on a walk with my partner I started laughing as despite the beautiful surroundings that photo popped into my head, I had to tell him all about it. When we got home he wanted to see the picture. This story has made our week! We are still talking about Ruby and Coconut.
