Finding a competent vet

I recently went to my vets on tues as i discovered my long haired piggie Morrisey had a problem on her nose, looked like a wart like growth. The vets despite allowing me to go all the way there knowing it was for a guinea pig had no clue about treating her and said the only vets that could would be over an hour away?! really.. its not like a guinea pig is an exotic pet! And then as i was there I thought I would have her nails cut as i do struggle on my own to hold her and the vet cut her poor little toe! I have made another appointment at the recommended place. Has anyone else found it this difficult!?
 
OHHHH Yes, lots of people have this trouble. It is notoriously difficult to find a piggy savvy vet, so much so that there are entire threads on the subject, and even a sticky in the health and illness page @)
 
Oh dear. I'm not very good at this forum chat layout thing lol . I'm just getting used to it all ! Should I have posted this elsewhere?
 
Oh no :o, I didn't mean that you shouldn't have posted it here, I just meant that it is a problen that most of us suffer from and gets talked about a lot, so we really all know how you feel.
It's a problem I'm having right now too except I'm in Northern Ireland and there are no tried and tested vets reccomended here :...

Guinea pigs are actually, exotic pets! In terms of veterinary medicine, there's four main groups - small animals (cats, dogs, rabbits), large animals (farm animals horses), equine (horses) and exotics (everything else!).

You're completely right to find a vet who is experienced in exotic species - sadly during their training, little time is spent teaching vets about exotic animals, so they either have to learn by further education and/or experience.

If you give us your location or your nearest town, I'm sure someone will be able to recommend somewhere that they've used and are happy with.
