I was in pets at home earlier today and was having a look (not to buy) the baby guinea pigs for sale. I noticed one had a very very watery and swollen eye, no green stuff to be seen though. I informed a member of staff who had a look at him and just said 'oh yeah, I'll put him in the back of the shop' I haven't stopped thinking of the poor thing all day. Does anyone know if they get their pigs checked over by a vet? I dread to think they would put him back in the run with the other pigs once I left the shop

Yes they do get checked by a vet. I took in a guinea pig from Pets@Home in York a few years ago, as during the vet check it was noted that she had a strange swelling inside her. The vet rechecked her again a few days later and it was decided to see if anyone could offer a home or a sanctuary place to her as they were concerned she would be life limited. We offered her a place at TEAS and she was seen by our vet immediately, who confirmed he could feel the swelling too, but said as she was very well in herself to see how she went on. She has never needed any treatment and has grown into a big, strong, healthy guinea pig. Anyway, the point I am making is, regardless of what people think about Pets@Home, they do get the piggies vet checked before they are put up for sale, and if they become ill or if anything is noticed to be wrong, they are seen by a vet again.

That's so good to hear. I wanted to take him home and get him seen to a vet myself but I just haven't got the space for any more pigs  Hopefully he will be okay and go to a nice home
