I've just dropped Spike off at the vets for an x-ray to see if he's got a bladder stone. :... Poor little thing is squeaking when he pees.
We've already been through two courses of Baytril, had a urine sample done and nothing, so an x-ray's the next thing.
I only went through this with Stripes in November so can't bare it if Spike has to have an operation as well. 8...
What else could be causing his discomfort?
He's fine in himself, no weight loss, happy eating and bouncing about as usual and he's started drinking again over the last couple of days.

Please keep fingers crossed for him.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Spike - I have that particular t-shirt myself and know how hard it is.

If you are ever again in a situation like this, you can try and convice your vet to try an x-ray without GA. It's a lot quicker, less risky on the piggy and MUCH cheaper! It took me some time, but I managed to wear down my vet and he now x-rays any cystitis piggy of mine without GA.

Our vets are not exotics speicalists but do seem to see quite a few GPs and don't use GA for x rays thank goodness.
I do find their system a bit odd though. I took him to the vets last night and he said lets book him in for an x ray at 9am today. So I took him this morning expecting to just be there while he was x rayed and they kept him in and said they'd ring me once he was done and the vet had looked at him so we could take it from there, and if I hadn't heard by 2pm to ring them!
Couldn't wait that long so the OH just rang now, he's had it done but the vet hasn't seen it yet.
I hate the thought of him being in a strange place on his own. Thank goodness he's got his cozy with him. And he hadn't finished his breakfast before he went! He's going to be grumpy when he gets home!

After similar experiences, I always hand my piggies in with cosy, a full tummy and more food in a freezer bag! The wait is just sooo frustrating...

BIG HUG

How's that for timing, the vet just called, no sign of a bladder stone from the x-ray or ultra sound, they're just waiting to take another urine sample.
She did say he's got a podgy belly and is over weight!
He weighs 1.35kg he's very active and charges about. I don't think he's podgy! Is he too heavy?

depends on his length. 1kg is a good weight for an average length piggy - if he's long then his healthy weight will be higher.

I'm so upset! It got to 2pm and I still hadn't had a call to say he could come home, I went down to 'rescue' him and take him so food as he hadn't had his breakfast (thinking we'd only we out for 1/2 hr - that was 5 hours ago!)
The poor little thing look so fed up, he was in a cage with just a bowl of water and pellets and nothing else and was starting at the cat opposite!
I told the nurse I was taking him home and would get a urine sample and bring it back. How can you leave a piglet for two hours with no veggies or hay and expect him to wee!
I sat him in an empty litter tray on the coffee table while he munched on some veggies and hay, 30 mins later I have a pot full of urine and am back to the vets while he's happy at home with Stripey Stripes snuggles up together.

That's the last time I'm leaving him! Best of it was the nurse I gave the urine to said it didn't look right - please can some one just tell me what colour is gp pee!?

Glad you went and rescued him, think the colour can depend on what they have eaten and if they have had too much calcium?

Fingers crossed you get some answers!

I am so glad for you and Spike that he hasn't got any bladder stones. That must be one major worry off your heart!

Guinea pig pee can be quite dark and discoloured without necessarily having any blood in it. I played that game with Llewelyn last year when he had cystitis and the vet thought "hysterical woman making it up" - however, Llewelyn came really down with a few days later!

Not all nurses have experience with grazers and are aware that they need a constant supply of nourishment. At least, he had some pellets, so he wasn't completely without food.

Spikes wee was white, it looked like milk.
When Stripes had a bladder stone it was very obvious there was blood in it but Spike's first urine sample didn't show any blood and it doesn't look bloody.
It's typical there was no squeeking when I collected the urine sample, but he's squeeked about three times since he went back in his house, so it's not every time he wees which is odd.
He's been drinking a lot more water the last two days. I was reading on another thread this can be a sign of illness but I'm not sure what. Any ideas?

Thank you, it is a big relief for him and me. (and my credit card! - already spent £85 this month on vet bills, not including today!) I just want to know what's wrong now so he can get better. :(

Spike says thank you very much for the hug, it makes a nice change from a squeeze which he's been getting a lot of from the vet!

Just rang the vets again to find out the test result, waiting for her to call me back. He's pushed his new cozy next to his hay bale and has sat on top of it stuffing his face with lovely orchard grass so can't be feeling that sorry for himself! :))

It might just be cystitis :)
Ask your vet for the antibiotic Septrin, it will help if it is just cystitis :)
My Poppy was squeaking intermittently for a while whilst weeing, x-rayed - no bladder stone. 100% better after a weeks course of Septrin :)

Thank you, he's had two weeks of Baytril which didn't make any difference so time for something else.
I shall speak to the vet about Septrin if she ever phones back! Otherwise I'll be on the doorstep tomorrow morning lol

Did you give Poppy cranberry juice? I was wondering whether to nip out and see if I can get some, only got sweetend in at home.

I gave Poppy Cranberry juice diluted but she hated it rolleyes
The Septrin dose Poppy had by the way is 0.5ml twice a day - you will probably have to seek a vet that will prescribe it as it is something not all vets will prescribe for a guinea pig as they are not all aware of the effective use of UTI'S and cystitis in guinea pigs.
When Poppy first had problems I made up a mix of human cystitis relief to syringe her over the course of three days - I can't remember the precise amount, hopefully someone else will know.
Poppy took this really well from the syringe and it did seems to help :)
