I have been reading lots of posts and found loads of helpful tips regarding care but was wondering , if their is a recommended list of items (non prescription) that we should have as an emergency medical kit for our Guinea pigs - I am quite interesting in any natural and organic products that members have tried and tested and recommend

You can find it in the "Caring for an Ill piggy" subsection to the Health/Illness section. There are also tips for probiotic and recovery food brands.

Sudocrem good for dry skin

Natural honey.. for cuts aids healing process

Septic Pen ... for little accidents when trimming nails

We also have things like Critical Care and Vit C tablets on hand if needed.

We also treat our piggies with xeno 450 every 6 months as a precaution against mites..

Also rubber gloves and selection of syringes..

Thanks once again for pointing me in the right direction. I don't have anything on reserve so will look at this thread for guidance.

Thanks for all the info - is xeno450 safe - the reason I ask is when I first had Guiness I was told to use Bob Martin Flea and mite for small mammals the next day I found him dragging his back legs, the vet thought he had had a bad reaction to the spot on , I wrote to Bob Martins who didn't disagree and refunded me the vets bills which amounted to £175 as he was hospitalised over night - hence I'm very wary and wonder if there is a natural remedy.

I an thinking of purchasing Peter Gurney piggy potions does any one own this book?

Xeno 450 is what my vets give me for my guinea pigs

OK Thanks - my vets pretty clueless and not offer any info - when Guiness had a cyst she got a book out to read up on it!

Hi Sara. Have you checked out our 'vet locator' tool at the top of the page? You can search for all recommended guinea pig savvy vets in your area.

I get mine online from vets UK, I also get my dogs flee and worming tabs from there too. Its a lot cheaper. You could put a post on here asking if anyone know of a good vet in your area.

This is what I currently keep in my first aid kit:

Oxbow Critical Care
A few jars of plain organic baby food
Benebac - probiotic
Variety of syringes (1cc, 5cc, 10cc, 15cc, 20cc)
A small bowl and spoon for making up Critical Care
Infacol - infant gas relief drops to help with bloat
Betadine
Antibacterial cream
Puppy/kitten Revolution - to treat mites/ringworm etc.
Saline eyedrops
Cotton tips – for cleaning ears and anal glands
Makeup remover rounds – for wiping grease glands, eyes etc.
Sterile gauze swabs – for cleaning wounds
Mineral oil – for cleaning grease and anal glands
Digital scale
Notebook to record weights
Nail clippers
Styptic powder – in case I cut through the quick when clipping nails
Clean white towels – used to wrap uncooperative piggies
Puppy pads – to use in the hospital cage under the fleece/towels
Latex gloves
2x3 "hospital cage" - to use if one of the piggies gets sick and needs to be isolated. I use light coloured fleece and towels inside it as it’s easier to identify blood/discharge.

I should probably also get some gauze and vetwrap for bandaging wounds, but I find most wounds are hard to wrap on a guinea pig so I tend to just keep them uncovered but check and clean them frequently :hmm:

I have piggy potions by Peter Gurney. It's not a bad book and some good ideas in it and worth a read if you can get a copy.

I have a medical box rather then first aid. I have basics like cotton wool, cotton buds, medical tape, bandages, syringes (various sizes), ivermectin drops, probiotic, critical care, metacam, antibiotics, cystophan, sudocream, ear drops, eye drops, gorgeous guineas products (shampoos and creams). Just off top of my head... :)

Thanks Piggielove, that list is extremely helpful - I have made a copy and will be getting all the items you suggested, as I only have 4 of them.
I have been wiping the grease gland with Johnsons baby shampoo diluted but not been very effective.
and using Johnsons Tea tree skin cream for small animals on cuts - I was so unsure wether to use human items (ie:Infacol - infant gas relief drops to help with bloat/ plain organic baby food /) but now I have some reassurance from mums who do I am happy to do so:nod:

You're welcome! It never hurts to have these things on hand. You're doing a good job by researching to provide the best care for your piggies.

I've heard virgin coconut oil is very effective on the grease gland. If you press a pad soaked in mineral oil or virgin coconut oil onto the grease gland and hold it there for a few minutes, it softens the grease and makes it easier to wipe off. Sometimes you have to be a bit vigorous and rub/pick it off since it becomes matted. It's pretty gross but it has to be done, and most piggies aren't too opposed to you getting it clean (mine even lie down when I'm doing it!). Good luck :)

For rescue remedy I have never put any on the neck but have known pigs that have had 1 drop orally to calm them down if they are distressed.

My mum once used it on a hamster - it work unbelievably well! I thought it was dead and and then a little rub of rescue remedy to it's nose and it was up and about as if nothing had happened! Maybe coincidence but I've never seen anything like it!
