Tomorrow it will be exactly a year since I brought Toffee and Biscuit home to live with me. I was completely new to guinea pigs when I got them and although I did a lot of research first and thought I knew enough, I soon found out that I had a lot to learn. I’ve learnt a huge amount this year and I honestly can’t imagine life without them now.
Most mornings I let them out into their play pen and sit down with them to give them their morning veggies. This is the best part of the day! They climb onto my legs and eat from my hand. Biscuit will sometimes sit on my lap for a few minutes if she’s in a good mood, but I don’t think Toffee will ever be comfortable with that so I’ve stopped trying now.
Toffee gets very excited at breakfast time. He zooms around the play pen and popcorns – as he does when I top up their hay. Biscuit is more restrained – she rarely popcorns (perhaps because she’s older?) so it’s lovely to see on the odd occasion when she does.
I think the biggest surprise I had is what a lot of mess they produce! I don’t just mean their poops though I was astonished at first at just how much of it there was! But there is hay EVERYWHERE! Even in the rooms they don’t go in!
I think I realised how they’ve taken over my life when I missed a phone call from my friend one morning. When I saw her later and she wondered why I hadn’t answered, I said matter-of-factly ‘well, it was piggy breakfast time’. The look of incomprehension on her face made me laugh
