I have had my pigs about 3 months now and this evening I have given them a bath for the first time. They are rescue pigs and they have been bathed at the rescue centre many times before.

I was a little nervous about bathing them as I didnt want to hurt them or frighten them in any way. I bought some shampoo from georgeos guineas on their recommendation and I used swarfega to clean their grease glans.

I bathed them 1 at a time in a very shallow bath. They seemed to get very frigtened and tense and there was lots of scrabbling around. I bathed them as best I could and and wrapped them up in towels to dry them off.

Has anyone got any tips or advice on bathing and how often to you bath your pigs?

Cheryl :)

We've still to give ours their first bath, little bit nervous about it but I'm sure it will be fine. Sounds to me as if you did everything right anyway,

I like to bath mine once a month if I can! in cold winter i tend not to but now i can as i have indoor runs and heating on, mine loves all the pampering and attention! X

I bathed my little boys yesterday for the first time!!!
the shy one was ok in the water. didnt care he was wet.
my little brave star froze as soon as he felt water. was frozen all through the bath, in the towel and while i was cuddling him. took him about 10 minutes after the bath to move again! made worry so much. and now he runs away from me!
my poor piggie :( xx

It's a bit scary the first time you bath them but you will become more confident :)) I bathe my boys as they are very long haired about every 12 weeks but give them little bum washes and regular butt trims in between to keep them in tip top condition x)
One of them sulks for a few hours after, will run off when he sees me :( but all is soon forgiven ;)

Thanks for the feed back :)

I am going to give bathing another go this weekend, I have been doing a bit more reading up so hopefully it will be a little less stressful this time... for me and them! :D

they dont need bathing that often. once every 3 months is more than enough. unless there is a medical reason to bath them.

everytime you bath them your stripping the natural oils from there fur and skin.

I have had mine nearly a year and I have never given them a bath. I have never been sure if I should or not. Anymore tips or advice? Do they need to be done?

its up to you, some people say yes, others say no. i personally think unless they are dirty or smelly then no dont bath them.

I regularly brush my girls and this helps :)
But i do bathe their butts usually every 2-3 weeks mainly cause one of them has loooong hair so it can get very messy and wet! :p

Bathing is an art...... just have everything pre organised even the treats to use when drying them off :)

I've had Dudley 2 years and bathed him for the first time this week since he'd somehow covered his belly in wee :-(
up until now I've never felt the need to bath him, he lives indoors so keeps clean but I agree it was a funny experience, his little face was adorable x

Ours have baths every few months or so in a shallow bath as well. I find putting a flannel or small towel in for them to sit on seems to help them keep still. Be warned though ours have started shaking like dogs and as Fudge is long haired you can imagine how far the water goes!

I'm not giving them a full bath just washing their bums where their grease glands are, one of them in particular seems to get fairly messy round that area. I dont think I will give them a full bath again until I think they need it :)

Thanks for the advice :)
