Awww! I've read that at the time they were rare imported exotic pets for the wealthy.

I wish I had the link, but I can remember reading not too long that the remains of a guinea pig were unearthed in the basement of an old home dating back to at least the 1800s. The circumstances made it clear that it was buried deliberately and was a pet and not a food item. Cool that they have such a long history (not just as farm animals, but as pets too!)
 
I bet that little girl loved her guinea pig so much :) I love seeing classic paintings of pets, especially of ones I have owned :P
 
Me too,its facinating,to think of the little thing happily munching away all thoese years ago.He looks relaxed with her.
 
I don't think the little bird the boy is holding looks too happy though!

Yes I've seen this picture before but never noticed. It does look like he was holding something and it got painted over for some reason.
