So one of our pigs, minners, has an infected toe. We were at the vets yesterday and he had to take pretty much the whole nail off and now her foot is bandaged. She's managing ok with it though.

She's got .5 mls of baytril once a day for 5 days. She had her first dose yesterday at the vets and so far all is normal. Eating hay, nuggets and veg and drinking. I have my poop soup recipe ready if she starts to get sluggish.

Is there anything else I should be doing? Or looking out for?

Hi, you could give her a pro biotic to help replenish the good bacteria. Bayrtil kills off bacteria in the gut giving the pig diarrhoea as it needs its good bacteria to help with digestion.

Also increasing vit c during illness is good too.

You can use pro c probiotic, this can be purchased off the internet or hate to say/ suggest P@H sell it, 1 scoop to 200ml water or sprinkle onto food. When using on food, mist the food first with water to allow the powder to stick. Hope this helps x

Aw, poor Minners - hope her foot gets better very soon x>>
A probiotic such as Fibreplex is good to give to her when using the Baytril as it can upset their little tummies, probiotics maintain the gut flora as Baytril kills off good bacteria as well as the ones causing infection.
Poop soup is ok if you have a healthy piggy not the piggy having any treatment but a 'ready made' one is just more convenient :)
Give it around 2 hours after the antibiotic - keep an eye on her poops as any soft ones indicate an upset in her digestive system and she may have a lapse of appetite. Imperitive to keep their gut moving :...
Vets have Fibreplex for sale for around £8-9 (bit cheaper off the net) and it is 1ml per kg of weight per piggy - I use this if any of mine have soft poops and it really does the trick :(|)

Keep us updated on Minners progress :)p

You can get vit c tablets from the chemist, not sure about powdered pro biotic but you could ask the pharmacist just be careful it doesn't contain dextrose/ lactose (added sugars).

There are human powdered forms but would be concerned about the dosage for a piggy.
Can you ring any vets near to you to ask if they have any in stock ?
All practises have emergency numbers to call on Sundays etc.
I'd feel inclined to do this tbh, Amazon do a next day delivery but is expensive as I discovered rolleyes

I don't know if it will get here quick enough if I order it online. I live in Dublin and we don't have pets at home here. Is there a human equivalent that can be bought from a chemist?

Here's a picture of the patient :)

I can't seem to copy the image code cos I'm on my iPhone.

I'll try and get some probiotic from a vet. I'm not too worried just yet as she's fine at the minute, just want to be prepared incase.

Oh and I have 3 other healthy pigs to collect poop from :D

Oh just thought, what consistency should the poop soup be? I assume just thin enough to get through the syringe?

I actually just found a pet shop open today that has pro c on their website. Gonna ring when they open and see if they have it instore.

That would be very handy, the shops only 10 minutes away.

Okay so they don't have the pro c in stock.

They do have Beapher guinea pig vitamin solution drops and Beapher small animal tummy care.

Anyone heard or used either of those? The tummy care sounds like it might be good, I'm gonna google it.

Tummy care always makes my water bottles leak, it also contains sugar so you might be better waiting and getting a soluble pro biotic or profibre.

I wonder why it would make them leak.

I checked and pro c contains glucose too. I can't find pro c on any other Irish websites so I might have to try the tummy care and poop soup.

I'll ring the vets tomorrow and see if they have anything different.

I think its because its quite thick and as it settles it clogs the spout. Makes a right mess and stains +++ which is quite worrying in itself!

I'd rather not put anything to chemically into her so just gonna stick with the poop soup. If she actually starts to get any problems then I'll get on to the vets.

Poo soup is an excellent pro-biotic always make it with the poo of a healthy piggie (best to wipe piggy mouth after also :)) )

Avi-pro plus is another excellent pro biotic can be found online easily and syringed with water or sprinkled onto food http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-suppleme...probiotic-products-c-5_172/avipro-plus-p-1225
If you find her poo's are getting runny due to anti-biotics then Fibreplex as mentioned by other posters is the one to reach for, I always have a tube in, it is amazing stuff

You piggie is gorgeous by the way!

^^ Thanks :)

Now I'm on a proper computer I can post the pic properly.

Day 3 and shes had 2 doses of Baytril so far, next one will be this evening. Still lively, eating lots of hay and drinking water, didnt seem too interested in a green bean this morning, so told the other half to take her out for a bit and make sure she is pooping properly, whilst I'm at work.

Will do poop soup tonight after next baytril.

Minners was back at the vets today. The bandage has been removed and the vet said it looks good.
I think it's still quite sore though, she licking it a lot and kinda jumps a but if she puts it down wrong. But she is still eating and pooping! She has Baytril for another 5 days as its still swollen, but I have some pro c now do all should be fine.

Here's a pic of the toe!

Just a quick question. Is it possible to give too much probiotic? I have some in the water as she is drinking loads at the minute and I figured it won't hurt the other 3. Shall I continue putting it into the water all the time, or just every other day?
