Hello

We are taking our piggies to the vets tomorrow for the first time, just to make sure all is well and I'm not overlooking anything I shouldn't be etc (we are new piggie owners!).

Is there anything in particular I should ask that I may not have thought of? I want to ask about nail length and clipping advice because both of ours have black nails and I'm not sure on how to tackle it.

Thanks in advance :)p

Whenever I take a new piggy to the vet for a 'health check' he usually checks their teeth (front ones usually), weighs them, listens to their heart/breathing & checks their skin/fur. Not sure if all vets do this & I can't say that I am very confident in mine but that's what he does {:|

The vets usually gives a little MOT to a new piggy. After starting out into my pigy life with a biting whirlwind, I let them do my nail clipping anyway (call me a chicken!)

You will get a feeling by watching your vet handle your piggies whether you trust him/her or not.

Just ask a simple question, such as "How many teeth does a guinea pig have?"
Make sure you know the answer before you ask (20), you can gauge the knowledge and interest in pigs by the response.

The vet looks good, the one we have registered with is called Chine House. The one more local said that they 'do a few guinea pigs... sometimes...' when I rang to enquire about registering - not really filling me with confidence there! - So I asked them what they would do if there was something seriously wrong and they said they would refer me to Chine House. It's not too far away so I thought I might as well just register there.

Thanks for the info, I'll ask them to give them a good look over.

Mabelle is a boy 8...

The vet seemed ok, I'm happy with the practice and the lady we saw was nice. She was obviously not fully familiar with piggies, she knew what she was on about but wanted to double check ages/dates (like how old they must be to be castrated) etc to make sure she was telling us correct and was asking another vet called Craig (who I think knows the most piggie stuff), which I thought was good. But she knew the general info like my question about their nails, sexing, checking their teeth and coat etc.

I'm going to ask to be booked in with Craig for other checks when we need them.

She said that they were healthy which is good.

But yes, Mabelle is a boy.... 8...mallethead8...

I saw a pig last night and the owner wondered why I referred to the pig as "He".
They had owned him for 3 years and thought it was a female! Two months ago they bought a 2 month old sow for company.............I think I detected a slight movement inside her abdomen!

I am pleased you have found somewhere you are happy with, Azura. It must have thrown you, to learn that Mabelle is a boy! Are you going to change his name?
