Some of you know that Bumble has suffered previously with bladder stones and even needed a CT scan to find the small one that was on the tip of his penis bone! - the bladder stones and stone on the bone (it rhymes! ) were removed successfully - but the x ray showed up 4 tiny stones lined up like soldiers in his ureter.
As surgery on the ureter is extremely risky my vet wanted to try him on Moduretic, which is used in humans to help prevent bladder stones forming and until now has it has not been able to be used on small animals as it has been difficult to get the exact dosage right - my vet has got instructions from the states on how to turn it into an oral suspension and we have been using this for the past 6 weeks - Bumble has also been on 2 ml of highland spring fizzy water 3 x a day for the past week - he was x-rayed last week and re x-rayed today - 3 of the 4 stones have been pushed out into the bladder by the fizzy water and I am to continue for a further week with it,in the hope that the remaining stone might also get pushed out into the bladder - he may even pass the stones by himself - if not my vet will carry out a minor procedure on him next week - the moduretic is doing its job as his urine was tested and no trace of calcium there - Bumble had a small kidney stone last year and was also put on the fizzy water therapy back then - 2 weeks later stone had gone - so worth a try with the fizzy water and moduretic if you have a bladder pig - but please check with your vet first - as you cant feed fizzy water willy nilly as too much could make them gassy and cause bloat -
If any one wants to try the moduretic my vet is happy to give your vet the instructions to make it up - it only cost me £10 for an 8 week supply. - my vet is Rachel Mowbray at vale vets in Dursley
