So today I took the plunge. The boys needed a bath, Finlay grease glands had been playing havoc in his bum quiff and Frankkie just wasn't very white.
After their bath, I noticed that Finlay has flakes in his hair, but I know he's not been scratching. Is it anything serious? is it what I've been feeding him?

He looks happy (apart from the bath), eats VERY well, drinks normally - no more no less than usual.

I'm just puzzled and nervous...
 
maybe it's just dry skin/dandruff? It doesn't always have to be nasties or something fungal... Is the whole fur flaky or just some bits of it?
 
OMG, i;d not even thought about fungal infections!

It's difficult to say cos he's still wet.... I'll have a look.
 
BUMP.

Just groomed Finlay, there are quite a few flakes and the hair I collected from the brush is quite sticky (despite the bath today).
I also brushed frank, but he's flake free.
 
My Mimsi has always had flakes. I just assumed it was piggie dandruff! He doesnt overly scratch. Mimsi has more greasy fur compared to my others. He must take after his mummyrolleyesrolleyes
 
maybe I just need to monitor him for a few weeks and see what happens.
 
Could it just be the white greasy stuff from his grease gland that's been disturbed by the bath? It may not have all come out of his fur.
 
Our Sully used to be like that, i did the drops and did the maleseb bathing too, but it never really went away........... sorry not much help am i :red

Like I said, he seems happy enough, he doesn't scratch and Frankkie's not affected by the issue. So I'm going to groom him daily, see if the flakes go that way.
I'm not going to bath him again for a while because he hats it so much and also because I'm trying to spend more qlty time with the pigs so if I start bathing them every time i take them out, it'll be counter productive.
I've just had him out for a cuddle and he just lay on my arm comfy as anything. As ever, he doesn't like me prodding and poking at his fur/skin... I blame that rough vet that saw him as a pup... really scared him!
 
You may want give Finlay a fungal coconeem melt and bath from gorgeous guineas to take care of that angle; but it can be just dry skin.
 
I'll do the bath/melt at the weekend. They've already had a bth thi week, I can't traumatise them!

after brushing, I realised that many flakes come with hairs, like 4/5 stands of hair attached at the 'root' by a flake. Does that help at all?

After 3 days of brushing, Fin's coat has improved but there are still many flakes. I have also noticed that Frankkie has some too, smaller and not giving his hair a sticky feel like Fin's.

that does sound like a fungal. I'm at a loss with my pigs- they have dandruff on their rump but no noticeable hair loss or thinning coats. i have treated them with coconeem melt and manuka shampoo twice now but they still have the dandruff. It is not mites because they have been treated for that! its frustrating cant get rid of the flakes
