Hello,

I have a Sheltie, who I was given by a friend who could no longer house her.
She is approx 1 year old and VERY quiet.

Last week I noticed, during my daily fly strike check, she had a dark scabby area on her rear, I panicked, googled and found out that it was her grease spot.

I read up on how to treat it, and went out bought supplies prepared and tried to de-grease and gave her a bath at the same time. The degrease was not successful and I think as it is so thick it causes her discomfort. It is only the size of my ring nail overall.

Having just returned from holiday I have now taken back my duties from a neighbor, and have noticed that in the area surrounding where I used the swarfeger she has white flakes detached from the healthy pink skin colour underneath. I didn't delve for long because she doesn't like below the waist/ bottom fiddling.

She has no other flakes on other areas and seems herself, eating well and drinking.

As it is localised is it likely to be that her skin dried out? Is there anything I could use in future to help restore moisture?

Do you have any advice on how to bathe and treat her in future, I am keen to sort the long term issue, and then be able to maintain it in future.

Thanks in advance.

the grease-gland is not a problem, it doesn't cause them any harm, it's just a bit smelly with males and greasy!

swarfega wipes clean it easily, but it shouldn't make her dry afterwards, as essentially the grease will return.

try a small amount of vaseline on the dry skin, hopefully it's just a reaction to the swarfega, if it doesn't look any better within a few days treat her for fungal. Don't use the swarfega again, just incase she's allergic to it, fairy liquid and and old tooth brush do exactly the same job...but it really isn't necessary to do it regularly.

I have only just adopted two boars a few weeks ago and they were both very greasy with very dirty glands. They had thick dirt stuck there. After I cleaned it all off I noticed the skin was slightly raw looking underneath and I applied vaseline and now they are good as new :) Definitely worth a try.
