Flaky Skin

Hi All,

Millie has really flaky skin like she is permanently malting hair and dry skin like dandruff comes off too. I am as sure as I can be that she doesn't have mites or lice. She doesn't appear to have bald patches despite losing what I would think of as a lot of fur. Any ideas what this could be? Is it needing a trip to the vet or is there something I can do at home for her? Doesn't seem to bother her it's just a bit unsightly and messy.

It could be fungal; but some guinea pigs do have issues with dry skin.

However, I still recommend a trip to your to make sure that you have the right diagnosis.

Can you pull the hair out easily? This is not as terrible as it sounds! A gentle tug is met with little resistance if there is a fungal infection, so the hair slides out fairly easily. A flake of skin is usually attached to a clump of hair. Have a look on Bonnie's thread for some good photos of a pig with fungal skin problems:
