Dear Flash,

We remember when you were born. Your mum was looking like she might pop, and chose the exact moment your grandmum went to make a cup of tea to bring you into the world, alongside your brother and sister. You were the smallest, but definitely the loudest! We named you after the white lock of hair on your forehead (along with your brother “Squint” [now Quint] and your sister “Stripey” [now Toffee]).

Originally, we weren’t sure if we could keep you, so we put up a snazzy “Looking for Home” post on TGPF. Unfortunately, people only wanted single baby boars, and we couldn’t bear to split you and your brother Quint.

The day we told you we were going to keep you, you just looked at us all confused.

You lived in our bedroom for a while. After you were neutered, we moved you into the room with the rest of the pigs. This decision was also made so we could sleep at night, you loved your 3am zoomies and excited wheeking because one of us dared breathe or roll over in bed.

You were SO NOISY after we put you up on the table. I like to think it’s because you missed us, but really it’s because you could smell lots of pigs but couldn’t see them.

As you aged, you became a lazy, comfy pig. You still loved to zoomie whenever we cleaned your cage out though, but the rest of the time was spent snoozing near your brother.

You also loved to chooken and look dead, straight after we cleaned your cage. It gave us a fright or two.

However, you were also very curious. You were always one of the first pigs to wander over and say hi when we came into the room. Whenever we offered you a tasty nommable, you didn’t want it. You were a silly, strange pig sometimes. You never gave up begging for treats, though you seldom ate them.

You had the best bond with your brother. I’ve never seen boars get along so well. You were almost always snuggled up together. On the very rare occasion one of you tried to assert dominance, you both got so excited by the whole affair you just popcorned and zoomied around the cage in celebration, then collapsed in a heap next to each other.

When Blackjack lost his boarmate Rolo, we tried to make you a trio. We figured since you were both so chill, we had a decent shot. It started off really well.

It was around this time you got ill. Eventually, you got too ill to move and Blackjack started nonstop dominance behaviour. It was a shame, because we really think you boys would have got along great in the longer term if you were hearty and hale. So, it was back to you and your brother. Quint never once bullied you, he actually fended Blackjack off when it all got a bit too much.

Unfortunately you continued to worsen, and we had to step in with syringe feeding. You hated it so much, but you took it nonetheless. The vet couldn’t figure out what was wrong with you – we tried everything we could, but nothing helped.

We kept you going for as long as we could, but we got to the point where you just couldn’t keep on piggling. You couldn’t move, one of your hind legs was completely frozen, the other wasn’t much better despite piggiotherapy. The painkillers were doing very little, unless they were opioids which just zonked you out. You had no appetite most of the time, and when you did there was something wrong with your chewing. Your bladder was the most inflamed the vet had ever seen, yet had no sludge or stones on the x-ray or ultrasound… Cystease did nothing either. We even tried Metatone (helped perk you up a little bit), and CBD balm (did nothing much apart from get you to flap your ears cutely).

We had to make the hardest decision as your mum and dad on the 24th January 2019. You were (and always will be) our baby boar, not even 2 years old. You were in so much pain, and you couldn’t do any of the activities of daily piggling anymore. You couldn’t even wee or poo properly. We took you to the vet with Quint, and the emergency vet was incredibly gentle with you and treated you with the care and respect you deserved. We showed Quint your body after you had popcorned and zoomied over Rainbow Bridge, but he wasn’t interested, other than a quick sniff. We think he said his goodbyes weeks earlier, when you started going really downhill.

Sweetheart, we love you so much. Your fur was so fluffy and your eyes were so bright and cheeky. You were our most silly, daft pig. In a word, a brush (albeit a very soft one). We’re devastated to not have you greeting us in the pig room any more. Please keep Rolo company, we don’t want him to be lonely without BJ.
