Flashie

My guinea pig Flash, is going through a naughty stage at the moment.

Usually, i get licks and little nibbles. I can put my finger on his teeth, wobble my finger and he will sit there and chirp and then proceed to climb up me. He isn't bothered AT all. No care in the world. I ADORE this guinea pig, and i have him out when possible. But Yesterday, Flash decided he was going to be naughty. I put him on my lap, he tries to escape. He nibbled me quite hard too, and with no warning he SHOOTS up my chest (He has just done it now too) I pick him up and i say to him "What is WRONG with you today?" and he leaned forward, and decided he was going to take a chunk out my cheek. This is so unlike him and he is being really fiddley at the moment. He is wheeking for food more too. He always has access to dry food and hay, and i give him a massive bowl of a variety of veggies every night and lettuce during the day when i hold him but he seems to still be wheeking for it. He is a very spoilt piggie too, with plenty of love for him.

Also, my hand will never be the same again. I have (I'm just going to count now) 12 scratches on my hand, in the past week that have bled. While I'm putting him in his cage, he tries to scramble back up my arm. I've checked i'm holding him right when i'm putting him down, I've put my hand litteraly on the bottom of the cage so he can hop off my hand.

On the 9th, i introduced Flash to 2 male guinea pigs, in a run one at a time. He didn't take much of a liking, so i'm considering getting him neutured and get him a female next year. Could his behaviour be because of this? He was trying to get really dominant with them, humping, making noises and so on..

Does anyone know what causing this and how i prevent it, because the nibbling, constant climbing up and ignoring me when i tell him firmly no and look him in the eyes is starting to get annoying! :)

**oh, and I don't know if this affects anything, but he is a 7 month old sheltie (not cross breed, full sheltie!)

he is going through the teenage stage....
My blaze nibbles me and when he does it hard i tell him that it hurts and he can do it but gently and the put him down..

with such a personality change, i'd take him to the vets for a checkup! it may be something else like mites. has he got any flakey skin or sores? mites come because of stress, maybe he got stressed from the introductions?

He has had mites before, from a rabbit he was staying with before i 'rescued' him but i'll give him a bath with the treatment we used before that got rid of them and if it doesn't work, we shall have a trip to the vets. He has no flakey skin or sores, i check most days.

I keep telling Flash that when he nibbles it hurts. I bring him to my eye level and in a firm voice i just tell him no and say that hurt.

I'm just so confused at why he is like this (he is my first and only pig, by the way.) because the day before yesterday he sat and licked my hand while i clipped his claws, no nibbling, not even light nibbling! I checked his teeth too, with no problems! He just sat and chirped at me! In the end he reached up to my face and started to lick it and basically gave me a piggie kiss and he sat on my lap and just slobbed out while i stroked him. Today, i've had hard nibbles, with a few licks, he has been really fiddly and keeps trying to run off. Its upsetting me a bit because i'm not sure if its me doing something wrong or if he is just being difficult. :(

All animals, including the two-legged and four-legged varieties, love nothing more than giving their parents a hard time when going through puberty. On the plus side, I'm betting that Flashie's puberty won't last the eight years that I have to look forward to with my two legged one.

Urgh so true! threenager (3 year old daughter) had a whopper of a tantrum at 1am last night! she woke up screaming banging on her walls demanding to watch doodle doo and launched into a huge hissy fit when I said no chance missy!

If shes like this at 3! god help me at 13!

I'm tempted to trade her in for some piggies

but then again my 3/4m old piggie is being a bit naughty at the moment. he nipped my ear yesterday and it hurt! I'm sure he didnt mean too but he is doing other naughty things liek not wanting cuddles. he would rather be playing with his new cage buddy and if I dare to pick one of them up they contunually try to escape and call to each other! Is actually quite sweet ^)

Parent hood is so fun! So Id say its a "phase" I use that word a lot to excuse my kids naughty patches :(|)

think i'll stick to parenthood of the animal variety as actual children just sound like too much hard work! i mean how exactly do you manage to have time to work, do household stuff, look after piggies AND children? there cant possibly be enough hours in the day!!

Compared to kids guinea pigs are a doddle

haha i only have a guinea pig - not old enough for children :{

It helps if you have a circus clown in the background (juggling skills are extremely important), and the ability to ignore clutter also comes in handy.

I'm with you on this one - by the time I get home from work, sort myself out, do the dinner, do the animals with OH, flop on the sofa to watch Corrie, the evening is all but gone! I don't know how some of my friends cope with work and children!
