Hi,

As my boys are primarily outside pigs (well in a shed) I am worried about fleas and mites etc what treatments would you recommend to prevent them getting the insect nasties? I have read the some guinea pigs react badly to Permethrin which seems to be in alot of products so I'm at abit of a loss.

Just to add I havent noticed any sign of fleas etc but prevention is better than trying to cure right.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Guinea pigs don't generally get fleas as they are species specific, however hay mites and lice are quite common. The best treatment I've found is ivermectin drops like Xeno450 available from your vets. You can use this monthly to prevent mite infestations. For lice infestations you can get shampoos, such as Gorgeous Guineas Lice 'N' Easy available online.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice, I must sound like some crazy paranoid woman ive asked so many questions.

Thanks very much x

Just one word to the wise; please do not self-treat unless you are really sure what you are treating! Fungal and mites can often look a lot more alike than pictures suggest, especially when you get bald patches in non-specific places. Please see a good piggy savvy vet for a safe diagnosis. With the right treatment, they can be got on top of fairly easily if you catch things pretty early. make sure that you give your piggies a good once-over at least once or even twice a week and weigh them weekly.

Thanks Wiebke,
I think if they did get lice or anything Id be off up to the vets, luckily we have a vets which comes highly recommended for all things guinea pig.
