Do guinea pigs get fleas?

I am a bit worried about my 2 boars, they are 3 months old today and I don’t want them getting fleas.

I have been bitten for the past 3 weeks by something and have come to the conclusion that its fleas after finding 2 in my house over the past few days.

I haven’t seen any fleas on the boys, they have been scratching and biting a bit but not excessively – so I cant work out whether they have them or not

I didn’t know whether I should treat them as if they have fleas, with a shampoo or something, can you buy flea shampoos for guinea pigs?

I would be grateful for any advice,

Laura

Yes guinea pigs can get fleas, the same type that affect cats. Do you have any other pets in your home? If so, they will need to be treated also. It is best to take them to the vet to get the appropriate treatment and treat other pets if you have them. You will also need to completely change all their bedding and disinfect their cage/hutch. Take a look at the link below:

Also a site called http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/ has a range of wonderful shampoos for guinea pigs.

I am sure someone more expert than me will come along to advise! Vet treatment for fleas isn't very expensive and this is your best course of action.

We have a cat who had fleas and we did flea treatment but they stayed aorund the home so we used RIP fleas, its about £30-£40 from a vet and you only have to use it once a year! its worked for us

You may want to move your piggies to a different room and spray the room down with someone to kill bugs and fleas. I would suggest not putting them back into the room for a day or two though, but it should kill any fleas in the room so that you can spray other rooms.
