does anyone have any info on this?

Ive heard shavings aren't good for piggies and to be honest there starting to drive me mad with the fact that because 2 of my piggies are long haired, when they wee the shavings stick to there fur and i then have to cut them out not to mention that when they tip some of there food out i cannot put it back in because its all mixed in the shavings and there food bowl is full of shavings too.

I'm new to fleece - have been using for a couple of weeks and I must confess I absolutley love it :))

The secret to it is to prepare it properly before you first use it. I washed mine three times (air drying in between washes) in non-bio washing powder - make sure you don't use any fabric conditioner as this will put back the barrier that you are trying to remove to allow the fleece to wick the 'wee wee' through to the towels beneath.

I have a layer of two towels and then one layer of fleece in my cages. I also have a litter tray in each cage which has shavings and hay on top. This is where their hay racks are and their pellets. As you know piggies tend to go to the toilet when they eat so this helps with the clean up.

On a daily basis I sweep up any pooh's from the fleece and empty/wash out the litter trays - although sometimes if I'm not feeling too sharp they get done every other day, with no nasty smells :))

Then once a week I sweep the fleece down (much easier then it sounds) and throw the whole lot, towels and all in the wash. I don't find any nasty smell leading up to clean out time - and my four piggies live in our kitchen/family room, where I spend a alot of time, so I would notice.

I used to use shavings like you, but I was always sweeping up the shavings from the floor after their pop corn sessions - despite the fact that to throughly clean out my two cages every week would have cost me £30 a month in shavings alone.

The initial outlay of Fleece 'can be' pricey but if you shop around you can get it at a good price. I got four 120x150 cm fleece's from ebay for £19.00 inc postage. Luckily I had quite a few old towels so they cost me nothing. So already the Fleece has paid for its self.

Sorry for the essay :red - if I can be of any more help, you know where I am ;)

hey

www.profleece.co.uk

this is where i got mine from but you can also get off ebay. this site was cheaper than ebay when i bought mine, but remember to check this!

I was on woodshavings but my piggies are allergic to it. I would not change the fleecing for the world! would definately recommend and in the long run, is cheaper! I just sweep up the poos every day and mine also have a little tray full of carefresh and hay on top.

They love the fleece and keeps their little paws warm! :)

is it ok to use polyester style fleece, rather than vet bed style?

and do boars smell on fleece?

I use the polyester fleece - imo easier to sweep up the poo's and hay then from the thick pile of vet bed.

I have two neutered bores and have not noticed any nasty smell from them.

no my pioggies dont smell on it

that fleecing should be fine too as starla said, i use it on my upper levels in my C&C

ive bought some polyester fleece and towels today will see how i go with that first as to be honest i couldnt afford the outlay of the pro-fleece vet bed. Ive only had my cavys 3 weeks and already they've cost me £250!

I bought x2 nemo towels (£2 each)
x2 white bath sheets (£2.31 each)
and a fleece (£4)

The fleece is currently in the wash, I'm really quite excited about this :))

another methos uusing towlling as fleece, is to sew two layers of towels between the fleecing to form one blanket. then the towel absorbs the wee and its neater. Hammocky hammocks do this for their fleece bottoms too. its really good.

We dont have an ikea near us :( but i work in a shop that sells baby blankets (£3 or £6) we have to right them off if they get dirty or rips in them or reduce them to silly money, may have to go round sweeping the floor with them and then reduce them, i buy them, wash them and there good to go .... thats the plan anyway lol
