fleece

ooo I like that hutch too. Anyway, I use fleece in my outdoor hutch. Only had piggies for 4 weeks - first two used wood shavings and hay then after reading lots on here I changed over. I put loads of newspaper down first then two layers of towels topped off by a large fleece blanket folded in half = two layers. Although I have put a cat litter tray in their wee wooden house with shavings and loads of hay so they can cosy in at night. Each day I take out the fleece and shake off the poo and stray hay into the compost heap and replace their house hay. They also have readigrass in a hay feeder thing. I change the whole thing, disinfect etc every 3 days...works great cos before that I was having to lift out lots of wet hay and shavings by hand and replace as necessary and the wee poos all got mixed up in everything - this way everytime they go back in the hutch it's all clean and dry. I shake off the fleeces and towels in the garden before washing in the machine. Hope that helps!

Oh also - when I put them in out door run in the morning and if it's dry - I take out the fleeces and towels and hang them on the washing line so everything is nice and fresh for going back in later.

Hi Lilac and Leigh. We have an outdoor hutch which hasn't been used yet. Bought in October last year when I'd taken in the piggies. The idea of fleece in the hutch sounds interesting and I would love to hear member's stories about this.

Leigh, some useful tips you have posted here lovely. :)

I started using a large fleece folded (from B & M) and 2 towels underneath, then layers of paper under towels, but it is soiled in minutes of them going back in. The fleece is damp and I just don't know if I'm doing this right or if it's worth using towels/fleece at all. I love the cosies, and want to buy a set, but how do members cope with all the poops that happens in a short space of time?

Ooh, forgot to click on the link first, but now I have, the hutch is similar to the one we have, only ours is the Primrose Cottage, and is slightly wide and taller. Don't think the primrose is available now though, but it was brill value at the time.

Monkeynutz, I think towels, which absorb better would wick the wetness through the fleece better than towels. I only use one layer of fleece but I don't know if that's why it works for me. If you cut one of your throws in half and try you have another change too :)

As for poops in cages and cosies it's just something you either clean up several times a day or live with... I usually turn the cosies over to empty them whenever I walk by the cage so that at least the poops won't accumulate :)) The piggies love their cosies, though... It's worth the washing :)

I will try with paper, then 1 or 2 towels, then a single layer of fleece on top. Is that what you meant in your post? :) I'm very tempted by the cosies aswell.

Well, I placed just 4-5 sheets of newspaper with 2 towels on top, then I cut the fleece I'd bought, and put a single layer over the towels. This morning, it all seemed pretty dry (YAY), apart from the poops, but they are no probs.

So thanks for the advice, hope it stays like this. I guess though, if they are in there for longer, then it may become damp, but as I'm working full time, I've been putting Maisy and our new baby in the run which is approx 6ft long, in the lounge on plastic, with stacks paper on top, just so they have lots of space. :)

Thanks.
