Hi,
I’m about to attempt to make my first set of cage liners. I’ve purchased two different coloured fleeces, one for top and one for bottom, and zorb material.
I understand I need to prewash the fleece to wick it, but could anyone tell me the best method for doing this please?
And also any advice as to whether the Zorb would need to be prewashed also? I’m planning on sewing the zorb to the fleece around the edges and in rectangular sections every two inches onwards towards the center. I read that this would potentially stop the zorb shrinking, but I wonder if I still need to prewash it.

Thanks in advance, Dan 😃

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to make the liners 1-2 inches larger than the cage just to try and account for any shrinkage when washing clean.
What wash setting would you prewash the zorb on?
Thanks again, Dan 😀

I tend to prewash everything in a regular wash at 40 degrees and then a quick wash at 60 degrees.

I rarely wash my liners any hotter than 40 degrees, but when the guinea pigs had a fungal problem a few years ago I did wash everything at 60 so it's nice to know that the liners can take if if necessary.

Awesome, thanks for the advice it’s really appreciated. Last thing I wanted to do was to ruin the fabrics after spending so much on them!
I just had one last question, when you prewash everything is that washing the layers before they are sewn together or after when the layers are all sewn up and ready to use?
Thanks, Dan

I always wash all layers separately first (before they are sewn together).

Zorb is really hard to get here in Switzerland, so I had a friend bring me some back from the US.
I was super excited, I assumed (I know) it didn't shrink, and I sewed it carefully into a lovely liner.

The first time I washed it the Zorb shrank and the whole liner turned into a wrinkly mess.
It isn't the end of the world - I still use it, but it never lays quite flat, and it annoys me every time I look at it!
Lesson learnt - I pre-wash (pre-shrink) everything now.
