Hi,

Looking for some advice regarding the smell.

I switched to fleece in both of my cages.
I cleaned, disinfected and showered both of the cages out. Then I lined them with puppy pads, newspaper with fleece ontop. This was last night - this morning I've had to redo it all as they smell SO bad. What am I doing wrong? I've heard people say fleece smells a lot better. Id like to continue to use it as it does seem less messy & the piggies seem to like it.

Also has anybody found boars smell worse? He smells double as much as my girls and there's only one of him!

Take the newspaper out, news paper REEKS once covered in wee imo! See if that helps. I've not used puppy pads before as I use towels but I'd imagine it's a similar premise.

I've also found that my boys stinks compared to the girls, yucky! :))

Shoulden smell in such a short time !

Is he drinking much water? Try giving him several good helpings of cucumber to flush his bladder

If that makes no differance ,might be wise to get the wee tested for uti ect

Newspaper wont do anything other than remain damp. I've used puppy pads and fleece for a few months and it never smelled bad. The only area that tends to smell is the soiled hay. Piggy wee on hay smells a bit like a stable.. :D

I use fleece in two thirds of the cage and sawdust in the hay trays which take up the other third. The trays (sawdust and HAY) are where they do most of their wees.

I dont feed them in the fleece area.

Fleece is a three layer liner consisting of fkeece zorb fleece or fleece mattress protector fleece or fleece washable incontinence pads fleece.

I also use mini liners under hidies and other high traffic areas. I wash the fleece cage liners once or twice a week.

How did you prepare the fleece before you used it in their cage?
Has it been washed several times with a very (very) small amount of detergent and no fabric conditioner?

my fleece has no smell... I don't understand what is wrong with your cage...
I use newspapers covered with fleece; when I remove fleece and I remove the wet papers I don't feel any smell, too. Infact I often don't even change them and I let them dry during piggies floor time. The fleece is outside in the balcony for some fresh air, but if it is raining it is not hung out and it does not smell as well.
Are your piggies eating only vegs and pellets? no grass? because I think the diet can make a difference and vegs contains a lot of nitrates which makes the wee smelling.
Be careful that a smelling wee might be a sign of an infection or too many proteins in the diet.
make an experiment: give them only hay and fresh grass for two days and see the differences.
My piggies don't eat pellets (only few pieces) and very few vegs. They don't drink but eat a lot of fresh grass sprayed with water.
Before this: put your nose on the fleece as soon as they wee; then on the newspaper underneath and on the puppy pad.
try to cut off the pellet. Only two days...
(I don't use any product for disinfecting; I wash the fleece once or twice a week)
