Hello everyone,
I was wondering if fleece is all right to use? I currently use carefresh which has been working great for me, and the pigs loved to snuggle on it. Now I have one pig, because little Shura passed away :'(.... but I was thinking of switching to fleece because carefresh is quite expensive.

What do you think?

Thank you :)

Yes it's absolutely fine I've used it for a few years now. You might need to wash it a few times to get it to wick away moisture properly and don't use fabric softener as it acts as a barrier against moisture.

So do you just put fleece down? Like polyester fleece you would get from a fabric shop? Where does the wee go? Is the idea that you just take it out, shake off the poo and wash it? Or do you put shavings or similar on top? Have been looking at some piccies in the photo gallery and people seem to just have fleece down.

Confused?! So thanks for any comments.

Ive put down a fleece blanket and Hriusha loves it... I find him all snuggled with his toy guinea pig.. very cute :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Fantastic info and link. Thanks for your replies and esp for the link daftscotslass.

My piggies have just had their last dose of woodshavings. We are going upmarket here! ;)

Noticed on another thread people mentioning pro fleece. Is this the thing to get or do people just go on down the haberdashers?

I also have micro plush blankets, they are similar to fleece. Is this okay to use as well? I am confused with the difference between profleece and fleece.

Is one better than another or it is much of a muchness? Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and reply daftscotslass. :)

No probs, I love the stuff. I don't like the vetbed/profleece stuff as although it's good for keeping pee away it's a nightmare when hay gets stuck to it. Any old polyester fleece is fine, I usually get the £2.50ish blankets from Ikea - I've a couple I've used for at least 2 years and still going strong.

Thanks daftscotslass for all this info on fleece. I'm really considering changing to it. Would it be too warm to use in summer? Also, any ideas where i can get any from? Thanks

No warmer than any other bedding - they don't go under it or anything. Sometimes fabric shops have offcuts but I usually just buy the fleece throws from Ikea.

Thanks again. I'm really trying to consider this carefully before i rush out and buy some. What are the pro's and cons of using fleece? and is it likely to be more time consuming as i dont have loads of time as it is? Also, if its not too much trouble, could you give me a simple step by step of how to use it. I was planning on using newspaper underneath the fleece. How often do you have to change your fleece and newspaper if you use it?

Thanks again, any more info you can give would be most appreciated.

If you read the link above it will answer all your questions. ;D

Will ask Laura who wrote the article if she or I could post the information as a sticky on here.

Thanks, have had a read through that. Just out of interest what do you use under your fleece and how often do you personally change the underneath and wash your fleece?

Thanks again.

for my shelties i have newspaer , fleece when i wash it i shake it outside to get rid of the hay food poo ect and then i put the fleece in an old pillow bay and stick it in the washer

I have 2/3 fleece and 1/3 megazorb and hay in the cage. Under both I have newspaper. I spot clean every day and the whole thing gets cleaned twice a week.

Hmmm… I guess fleece is definitely the most cost-saving beddings.
However the cleaning part is kinda tedious because my mum doesn’t allow me to wash the fleece/towel using the washing machine!
Initially we sent to the laundry but they rejected it now =( :'( :'(
So we gotta hand-wash the fleece/towel.. boo. Its so heavy. Hahaahha.. since I’m using the 4x2 cage.

Ive brought some fleece blankets from matalan for £8 each! and have washed them twice, will that be enough to start using them? I'm actually quite excited, as i think the pigs will love it! Ill be using newspaper underneath, and hopefully getting a litter tray to put hay in!

my indoor piggies love the fleece i wouldnt swap back now , like i say i wash it in a old pillow case to catch any hay bits that i might have missed

Hmm.. so ive put the fleece in today, and i dont like it already. The fleece blankets i brought were huge, and were a nightmare to cut, so now ive ended up with 3 bits that are too small, and one thats in there now but doesnt fit correctly. Also, as soon as i put the guinea pigs in there, they started dragging their bums across it leaving stains galore.. Also, they weed and its not soaked through, ie. is still very much on the surface... Ive washed the fleece three times before without fabric conditioner. Am i doing something wrong? I just wanted to make it nice for my piggies, but now I'm really gutted it isnt as good as i wanted it to be.. :| Please help.

It might take more washes. Also make sure you're not using a 2 in 1. Silly as it may sound sometimes one side wicks and the other doesn't so try it the other way round.

I should have said... I never cut the fleece to fit as it can shrink in the wash. I just fold it.

Damn! Ive been to work and checked it at about 2.00, and poop picked! then just checked it again and its ditched.. My boys poo so much its unbelievable. Wee definitely hasnt soaked through and basically I'm not sure whether to just give up with it. Their furs stuck all over it too, ive only got shorthairs but they malt like crazy!

Daftscotslass - I thought about not cutting it and just folding it, but then i thought that because its massive, it would be too thick.. How do you stop your fleece from moving when the guineapigs run around on it?

Thanks again. Maybe it will just take some time to get used to.

Dunno... mine just doesn't move when they run on it and I've never done anything to stop it moving! ;D

Sorry that's not much help! Maybe try washing it another few times, even just on a cool rinse cycle rather than a full wash.

Ahh right, maybe its just me then.. Dont be daft daftscotslass.. you've been so much help. I dont suppose you have any pictures of your set-up and your piggies? Id just love to see.

hi :)
i have been using fleece for a while now and love it but it does take some getting used to ::)
i have found that the best fleece are blankets from the really cheap textiles shops, they take the pee away straight away. i bought some really good thick stuff from a haberdashery on sale and its crap! >:( one its black and all the hairs show up and don't seem to want to come off in the wash and two it shrunk massively.
i have problems with my piggies hiding underneath the fleece >:D and have found that if i get a piece big enough to tuck down the sides of the correx i can stop this. not that i really mind as i put towels and newspaper underneath and the pigs seem to quite like playing underneat 2funny they soon surface when food appears ;D
anyway i have put some pics of my piggy house with fleece in so you can see what i mean hope this helps :)

hiding >:D brings a whole new meaning to the saying pigs in blankets! ;D ;D ;D

Your set-up is fantastic. Tne folding the fleece over the correx idea is great, i may well just try that when i can get some more fleece as mine just isnt big enough, since i cut it strangely|!

I know what you mean about the dark colours showing up the fur, as the one ive got is dark brown, and shows up the fur very badly. do guineas malt all year round out of interest? I wish my cage was that big and luxurious! How many piggies do you have living in there?

If anyone else uses fleece and can show me your set-up, i'd love to see them.
Thanks

i currently have two pigs in there, Milly and molly :smitten: but when womble is old enough to have the snip >:D hopefully he will move in with the girls ;D.

my sister got me a couple of fleece blankets from Ikea on sat (£1.59 each) I took 3 pairs of scissors to find some that would actually cut them down to size. I've managed to cover the floor of a double hutch out of 1 blanket with enough spare to probably do the top hutch again. (will have to get some decent scissors to cut up the other blanket) My piggies don't seem to be too bothered by the change of bedding but its great for shaking the poo off although they have been spreading the hay from out of their toilet rolls all over it & that's a real pain to get off, It sticks like glue. The fleece must work pretty well of absorbing the wee even though they are pretty thin cos the newspapers underneath are sodden When I change them twice a day. I'm using much less hay so that's a bonus but more newspapers but luckily I can get loads of the local fee ones from the library where I work plus I swap my mum papers for piggy poo which she uses on her compost heap.
