As the weather gets hotter, more and more flies are attracted to my guinea pigs' cage, and aside from buzzing around and being incredibly annoying I am afraid that they will be laying eggs in the cage or spreading disease.
How can I get rid of them? I have thought of using a fly repellent spray, are there any out there that are completely safe to be used around guinea pigs?
I have tried leaving the windows open to try and shoo them out but it just attracts more of them and they all seem to be taking up residence in the cage - crawling in the bedding or hanging off the bars
I spot clean the cage every day with a full clean out every 3 days, but the flies are still there even just after the cage has been cleaned with fresh bedding.
This is the first time I've had this problem, any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Using a spray that contains citronella or making your own solution is something that you can do around guinea pigs.

The main problem is blowfly strike; which is an absolute emergency if it strikes. please check your piggies daily, especially the bum end. this hot weather has cetainly brought them out! this link also contains tips on how to keep flies away.

Have you tried placing flypaper near the cage? This would not involve potentially harmful chemicals and could at least ensure that the flies were not able to annoy or harm your guinea pigs.
