How often ( on avaerage ) should guinea pigs be given floortime?
I have 2 females in a 2 by 4 c and c cage along with 2 exta squared spaces, basically 10 grids worth of florrspace just over 2 by 4.
I have asked a question like this on a facebook group but alot of the answers seem very often. One person mentioned they have theirs out every day for 2 to 3 hours. Thats great but not realistic for everybody, I am at collage 3 days a week with long hours which would make it hard to do florrtime on those days.
How often would u reccomend? And how long each time ?

Hmmmm it depends, I would do twice a week if you can. They cage is a good size, let’s face it piggies are not known for their athletic ability

When we had a smaller cage we’d do run time twice a week when cleaning.

My boys get 2-3 hours of floortime when I do a full cage cleanse. This happens every 3 days. My boys aren’t too fond of floor time but they are warming up to it.
This gives daddy (me) a chance to give them fresh towels and fresh fleece.
Plus they are starting to lap up my kitchen (where floor time happens) the last few explorations out of the cage.

Being in college is tough but if you know you have to clean their cage why not take them out to give you a chance to thoroughly clean. Choice is yours. Good luck.

Mine only get floor time once or twice per week as I'm also very busy. But they do have very large cage spaces. In fact, when they have floor time, they are asking to go back to their cages after 5 minutes anyway! So I only tend to leave them out for half an hour

You folks have no idea how much you’ve unknowingly helped me out. I have 3 pairs of boars and they get floor time 3 days out (2-3 hours each time) and one day in their cage. This is standard routine. Each pair have their own run which I line with newspaper and hay. It’s a long process setting the runs up and clearing up afterwards. My physicality is ailing a bit and I’m finding it a bit too much to maintain. If I leave them in their cages for more than a day I feel guilty. Thank you for making my life a bit easier 🤗

I do floor time once or twice a week too. Getting them out isn't the issue, it's the time and energy to clean up before and after.

I found more often than twice a week and they'd just go and nap anyway. With only once or twice a week they take their chance to have a proper run (in about three 10 second stints - they have thesame attitude as me towards exercise clearly).

Our piggies get floor time most days but i'm sure they don't really need to be out every day. We put the runs up in our living room and just leave them up for a few days. We poo pick them and change out the dirty hay each day. We watch tv most evenings with the two skinny pigs running around our feet. They seem happy with this arrangement and Dora likes to sit on our feet and have a chew of our socks given the opportunity.

I rarely wear socks so our skinnies lick my feet!

Nova is a black skinny so looks like a mini hippo running round the livingroom!

My piggies don't get floor time. They do have timeshare in the run every other day. Betsy and Meg live in the Penthouse Suite of the hutch while Lexi and Thea live in the Granny Annexe. The hutch is in the garage. Betsy and Meg are too old now for running about too much and just bimble around doing old arthritic lady piggy stuff. Lexi and Thea love it out in the run and occasionally play zoomies . The hutch is 6ft x 2ft and the run is 4ft x 4ft so plenty of room for 2 girlies to play. If I gave Lexi and Thea floor time I would never catch them. They have been here about 8 weeks now and they are slowly warming up to me.

Nova use to be thesame! Once she got confident in the livingroom she was impossible to catch. She's so rediculously fast when she tries. She still evades my partner but will most the time reluctantly accept being scooped up in a corner by me (she knows it means back to the cage for snacks!).

Mine don’t get floor time simply because when offered they remained in the cage.
I bought a bunny play pen and set it up to give them lots of space to play and left the cage open for them to come and go.
An occasional foray out was about the limit, but they do have a big cage.
Climbing over the bunny play pen to move through the hall gave me more exercise than them.

I have 5 single boars 3 of them get floor time every other dayish when I can fit them in, they mostly like to run around visiting the other cages and chatting through the bars. 1 gets time every evening as he loves it and has his routine, I just open his cage and he comes and goes as he pleases. The other one hates floor time and just cowers in a hidey. He gets time in a run in the kitchen about twice a week as he seems to prefer that, especially if the sun is coming in the window and he can have a sleep in a patch of sunlight, out of cage time is really wasted on him!
