My poor baby is unwell.

Just got back from the vets as she has been in bed all day and when I checked her she's snotty, crusty eyes, manky ear (only one).

Anyway shes had an antibiotic injection and an anti inflammatory (she really squealed when they did those). The vet said she sounded chesty. Shes going back tomorrow.

Anything else I can do?

Any thoughts?

So sorry that Flopsy is poorly, sounds as if the vet has it covered, just try to keep her warm and comfy until tomorrow, hope she is feeling better soon.:(

I'm sorry she's been taken ill Lisa.

Did the vet prescribe any meds to give at home at all? Allowing her to sniff some Vicks Vaporub/Olbas Oil can sometimes help with congestion. Is she eating normally etc.?

Thanks guys

Nope she's not eating normally at all. I gave her veggies in her bed earlier and she ate them and she had some parsley off me about an hour ago.

She's had very little else.

I have put her in a cage on her own so I can monitor what she's eating / drinking. She seems fine about that, doesn't seem to care. She has a bowl of veg in front of her and is nibbling a bit - going to start on critical care once the kids are in bed.

No meds to give her at home as she's back first thing tomorrow morning for another appointment and if needs be will be given oral baytril then.

Poor baby, i have to say I'm very worried about her.

Do you think the symptoms sound like a cold, you know yourself that you appetite isn't the same when you have a cold, like you said, try her with some CC, and small amount of water. Do you have a snuggle safe or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel that you could pop into her enclosure.

Sending you big hugs!

Make sure that she is drinking and has hay near.

If she is very congested, you can ask your vet for bisolvon powder. Otherwise, you are on it - that is the important thing!

Thanks. Kids have just gone up so going to start with the syringing.

Flopsy is the first guinea we got, she and her sister hold a real soft spot with us all as they really showed us how sweet kind and addictive guineas can be.

Fingers crossed for flopsy, if you have some metatone it won't hurt to give her a dose hope you manage to get some sleep and everything goes well at the vets tomorrow

I do have some actually. I got my first aid kit sorted 2 weeks ago.

Good thinking!

Thanks guys

Just wondered, have you any idea how much water you put with the critical care and how much they should roughly be taking because our vet gave us some for our guinea pig tonight along with baytril but didn't say how to mix it or how much he should have. I've tried going to the site that it states on the back of the packet but the site doesn't work. I've never fed this before so I'm clueless.:red My piggy is on Supreme Science recovery and vet just gave us one sachet. He has to go back on Monday to check how he's doing.

Sorry I have no more advice to offer that hasnt already been said. I know how scary it can be when they are like that.

Sending healing vibes !

Sorry meant to say on my post above that I hope Flopsy gets better soon. My guinea pig isn't eating much either and I'm very worried about him. The vet doesn't seem to know what's wrong because he is breathing fine and no runny nose or temperature.

My Critical Care Fine Grind says;

Mix 1 part Critical Care Fine Grind with 3 parts warm water. The volume of water may be adjusted to obtain optimal feeding consistency. Amounts are general guidelines and should be adjusted based on patient condition.
Herbivorous mammals; Feed *3 Tbsp per kg of body weight daily
*1 Tbsp is equal to approximately 9 grams
Storage: A cool, dry location. Discard and remaining mixed product after 24 hours.

Not sure on the Supreme Science one though as I only have the CC one in the house.

As thick as you can and still get it in and out of the syringe, is what I was told. (Also you cut the nozzle off the syringe). I found that sucking it into the syringe dries the mixture out, so you have to keep dripping a bit more water onto it.

Oh thanks both of you for that. I've given him a bit tonight but he probably only took 1 tablespoon. He weighs 1.36kg cos I saw it on the vets computer. I'll try mixing it a bit thicker tomorrow. I really wish she had given me more of it though because I don't think one sachet will be enough do you? I know Vet UK sell the Science selective one though, wonder whether I should order some sachets from them?

I think the general aim of critical care food is as much as you can as often as you can(every few hours through the day) and try not to leave it too long overnight. You need to keep the mixture thick to make sure they chew a little bit so that they keep their teeth in check! If you run out of critical care you can always go back to the vet for more or grind up some nuggets and make a mixture out of that. Keep offering favourite veggies to tempt them as it is better if they choose to eat!

Well she seems quite active this morning. She is in her solo cage and has been in and out of her igloo this morning.

She's not eaten anywhere near enough food but she is still eating hay / readigrass and some veg (she's had a green bean this morning)

As for critical care - I probably make it runnier than stated to get it out of the syringe.

I don't suck it up the syringe I spoon it into the syringe.

What size of syringe are you using? I use a 1 ml syringe and cut off the end and find that works really well, and is the perfect size to go into their mouth.

Good news that shes eating. Really hoping that she continues to get better. xx

It sounds like she's doing ok, the fact she is still eating something is good.

I tend to mix up the Critical Care according to the instructions, then water it down to consistency that works, or add a pinch more powder if necessary. I much prefer the Critical Care Fine Grind as it can be made quite thick without needing to cut the tip off the syringe, whereas no matter how watery I make the regular Critical Care it will not go through the tip of the syringe.

Nemo, it is worth asking your vet for more sachets of Science Recovery, one sachet is nowhere near enough to sustain a piggie for 4 days!

Glad she is doing well and hope the vets visit this morning will go well for you both!

Oral baytril 0.2ml twice a day

I got a good look at her this morning and her nose isn't snotty at all. Slightly crust eyes, still a bit chesty apparently.

She seems to be loving solo life at the moment which is weird as her sister keeps looking for her. She's been into the hay and grass alot this morning. Going to syringe her soon.

She seems to have lost 70g in a couple of weeks so I am guessing this has been there for a while.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Good thing that her appetite for hay and grass is still there!

Best of luck with the C&C!

SYRINGE FEEDING.
Try Burgess Excel Pellets, in the orange bag. They are a tiny fraction of the cost of CC.
Put a small quantity in a dish and cover with hot water. Wait 10 or 15 minutes and they will dissolve, if need be mash with a fork to a paste. When the consistency is correct it is possible to load a 1ml syringe single handed.

There is no need at all to cut the end off the syringe. I have yet to discover why others find it necessary to do that!

Glad she's a little perkier today Lisa :)

Might be worth getting some to have as a back up for the future, this is why I bought the CC, I haven't had to use it as yet, thankfully. But it is there if I need it.

As for now, I'd go back to your vet and get some more. Although Vet UK are quick at delivery, you'll still have to wait. Hope your piggie is on the mend too.
