Following on from a post in the poisoning thread in Health and Illness someone mentioned Florette salad bags might be poisonous to guineas. Does anyone know anything about this? My pigs get it quite often as I eat it but now I'm worried.

Not a member, no not able to view. Would be interested in the answer though. Do they make them with different ingredients, as if some have iceberg, or leeks? these wouldn't be very good. xx

Can't access the thread but I will join tomorrow I think so I can read it :(

I have not read the thread through properly, I think Char-x is a more active member there and may be able to tell us more. I'll have a good read through tomorrow when I've got more time.

Anybody been able to read the thread?

Would be good for all of us to know what it says and if its anything to be concerned about.

I have now read through the thread and am not much wiser to be honest :{
Its not very clear why the poster decided it was the Florette which was to blame, but lots of valid points were made about needing to wash pre-washed salad bags which I always do, and not giving too much lettuce. However I still don't know why this brand in particular is thought to be a problem mallethead
*Sigh* veggies are such hard work :(

I read the thread and i am bemused by alot of it! I could not work out why florrette was worse than any other, but thought to be contaminated by bacteria thus the upset tummies. But these things can happen if you do not sterilise your water bottles? They also made a thing about bird poo which is all well and good but if you let your pigs outside it is more than likely to come in contact with bird poo.

Also why should they not have stems and only leaves?

Feel more confused for reading this thread!

It wouldn't be anything to do with the stuff they put in pre prepared salads to preserve them longer? I can't remember what this is just that I read something a while back about it. I think it is some kind of gas that is put in the bag that stops the leaves wilting.

I wouldn't have thought so because they do that with all brands of salad, not just this one. I just don't get it at all :(:{mallethead

True.. I just did a google on bagged salads as it was annoying me - apparently bagged salads can be washed in a chlorine soloution that is a greater concentrate than the local swimming pool (!) They can be sitting bagged for up to a month before they hit shelves, basically they use a process called 'Modified Atmosphere Packaging' to stop the food oxidising eventhough the food isn't itself rotting a lot of the nutrients are lost and the whole process kills off alot of the vitamin C
Sorry - this may be going off the thread... just knew there was a reason I avoided it that wasn't just the high cost!
