Today I took Florrie to an exotic knowledgeable vet. I noticed on Sunday she seemed a lot less chunky up top half. Monday she didn't seem to be eating her hay (much) and she hardly eats much veg anymore. She has lost two oz since last week. Anyway....she had been to my local vet over a month ago who diagnosed a cyst on liver/kidney and to keep an eye on her.

So off we went, upon only feeling her she knew it was ovarian. She drained it and had a hormone injection and another in two weeks with a scan so a further plan will be made then. Vet didnt mention the injection untill I mentioned it and that's only because of someone I follow on YouTube. I'm not angry that my vet mis diagnosed as they openly said they only have small knowledge on pigs.

Read info and posts on here so future looks good for her with regards to the injections. This week I was able to bond her with my neutered male. Do people think I should wait for her recheck or go ahead? Vet didn't see any reason as to why not.

We have had injections in the past for our piggy with Ovarian cysts and they worked a treat. Two injections did the check, it is good she is having a scan to re-check.

Is she back eating okay now? No reason why you couldn't try the bonding but I would make sire she is eating first. How is the weight loss now. So did your usual vet give the injection or the exotic vet? It always helps to find a cavy savy vet, it is a myth that all exotics know about piggies. Some of the best cavy vets in the UK are not exotic specialists.. so don't be mislead by the title. If you can find a vet that knows their stuff about piggies then stick with them.

Sending lots of healing vibes to Florrie and well done for being on the ball, you have caught the cysts early.

It was the exotic vet that gave the injection. I ended up taking Betsy there who was then pts. Hence why Florrie is on her own.
She's been with me for 2hrs this eve and seems way more alert and Perkier already. Eating her hay and tucked into her veggies. I will see how she is tomorrow and will introduce them on Monday.

Hi my 4 year old piggie has just been diagnosed with a Ovarian cyst. They have given me 2 options, pain killers to see if that helps her get her appetite back or spaying her which obviously has risks. Having just done a bit of research I keep reading about draining the cyst and hormone injections. Is this procedure carried out at most vets or would I have to find a specialist one ? it sounds like a far better/safer option.

Generally, small animal vets or general vets with access to a small animal specialist are more willing to consider the less invasive alternatives to a spay. It may be worth getting a second opinion if that is possible for you.

From what I've researched and from speaking to 2 different vets it depends on the growth speed of the cyst. Pain killers may help but its not going to take away the cyst. I opted for the drain and injection because of florries age and also so many good reports. 2 months on and she's still fine. The vet i used was all for the injections. What area do you live?

I live in Hitchin Hertfordshire. The more I have read the more I think drawing and injections are best to try first.will be phoning the vet first thing tomorrow .thanks

My Ellie had the hcg chorulon hormone injections for a walnut sized ovarian cyst.
She was 6yrs old when she had the first two injections (approx 7-10days apart As she was too old for a spay.

She did very well with the injections & the cyst shrank in size within a few weeks.
She went back about 12 months later for 2 more injections as the cyst had grown again.
They were successful both times for her.

Ellie didnt show any of the textbook signs of ovarian cysts .(crusty nipples, hair loss on her sides, temperamental, dominance etc)
But she did seem to improve in mood &her coat went really soft &shiney within a day or two.

My vets is a large rural practice with no exotics vet as such but a few small animal vets&I usually just ask to see the same 2 vets that seem to be guinea savvy .

Healing vibes to flossie.
Xx
