I'm making some piggy treats with recipes from the 'Cooking for my cavy' book for the rescue fair on Saturday!

One calls for 'corn meal' - I haven't been able to find this in any shops, but it is basically flour made from corn.

Are piggies ok with plain wheat flour instead? I've looked online but can't find if it's ok for them or not!

Thanks :)

Is cornmeal the same as we call cornflour? I don’t know if they can eat it though. I used wheat flour and beetroot powder to make a pet safe paint before. But they weren’t actually eating it. It’s a strange one.

I’ve looked it up on line and as far as I can see it looks a yellow colour so it’s probably not like cornflour. It says it’s a common Indian ingredient so maybe it’s available at the world foods but in the supermarkets. Good luck hope you find a suitable flour.

Cornmeal is a meal (coarse flour) ground from dried maize (corn). It is a common staple food, and is ground to fine, medium, and coarse consistencies, but not as fine as wheat flour.[1] In the United States, very finely ground cornmeal is also referred to as corn flour.[1] When fine cornmeal is made from maize that has been soaked in an alkaline solution, e.g., limewater (a process known as nixtamalization), it is called masa, which is used for making tamales and tortillas. Boiled cornmeal is called polenta in Italy.

Most pig food has wheat as a main ingredient so I’d image it would be ok to use ?

Probably. Or you could whizz up some oats in a blender and use that?

I think corn flour would be better, I guess it depends what kind of diet they're on too. If they have Burgess excel for example it won't make much difference as it contains a lot of wheat already, but if you're on grain free it might be an idea to avoid it. I personally wouldn't use wheat ingredients for animal food/treats but that's just me! :)

And show us pics! I've never made anything for the pigs, I worry about giving myself food poisoning so I don't know if it would be a good idea to cook for them too :lol!:
