Fluff who we rescued approx 5 weeks ago gave birth to 3 beautiful babies yesterday. Two of the babies are perfectly healthy, however the third baby is blind and appears to only have her bottom teeth :( I am unsure what to do about this little one, any help or advice please......

Hi, congratulations on the babies but so sorry that one of them has problems. Is that baby pure white by any chance?

Sometimes guinea pigs are born known as 'Lethals', they're pure white and can be blind and have teeth problems. Sometimes they have very severe problems and can die very young, but sometimes they can live happy lives, even if they are blind.

There are quite a few posts on here about lethal pigs and some other people will be able to give you more advice about them. If that is the problem.

I hope your little piggy is ok anyway. Is it the same size as the others and is it feeding ok?

If you speak to the user called furryfriends. She's got two little lethal boys at the moment and she'll be able to give you some advice and information. I'm sure she'll spot this thread very soon.

Hi congratulations on the new arrivals. I believe lethals often have teeth problems. You may know already but Jenny Towers at Active Vet Care in Tilehurst near Reading is a very experienced guinea pig vet and would certainly be a good contact for you should she need ongoing dental work.

I've just had a look at a pic of Fluff and she is a roan, she must've mated with another roan, presumably dad or brother before she came to you, to produce this little baby. Very sadly very few survive the birth, so this little one is already beating the odds. Bill & Ted, the lethal brothers, were the result of a petshop pregnancy and are doing remarkably well.

Lethals are typically white, blind & deaf, often with dental problems, the more badly affected will also have internal problems. If they make it, they behave almost completely normally as no-one has told them they are different to other piggies.

Although a roan-roan mating produces a 25% lethal gene combination, resulting in a 'lethal', the other babies will be unaffected and are completely normal.

Having a good vet will be crucial if this little one makes it past weaning, the only other vet I could recommend would be Simon Maddock, Bill & Ted's vet. They were homed to furryfriends so they could be under his treatment. Sadly my vet will not do conscious dentals and as the boys are likely to need frequent treatment the layering up of GA's was not a viable option.

If the baby is getting pushed aside by the other babies, a bit of one on one time with mum to ensure a full feed would be wise. Good luck, please let us know how they all get on.

Thankyou. I didn't know about Jenny Towers, but as she is not too far from me yes she is a good contact and I will definitely get in touch with her.

I think Fluff probably mated with her brother, we did not know she was pregnant when we got her.
This little one who I have called "Star" is white, blind and deaf and only has her bottom teeth. However she seems to be doing wee's and poo's. She has been feeding from mum, although does get shoved out of the way at times by her sibblings. I have been giving her time alone with mum today, much to mums disgrace (she kept calling to the other two babies).
Star is such a lovely little one and I really do want to do the best for her, so I am searching for a specialist vet and will also be contacting furryfriends for any help/advice she can give.
The other two babies are perfectly normal and doing well. Fluff seems to be a really god mummy.
I will keep you up to date with their progress.
Thanks for all your help Suzy x x

Just to let you know, I use Jenny Towers all the time for my piggies. She is a fantastic vet and great with my dental piggie. I would'nt go anywhere else now.

Update on Fluffs babies

Hi everyone, thought it was about time I gave you an update on Fluffs Babies (sorry I haven't done so sooner...have had real problems with my computer grrrr).

Sadly our little "Star" who was born blind and deaf only lived just over two weeks, she was such a sweetie, with a very loud weeeeek. I was hand rearing her as her brothers were pushing her out a feed time. Such a little darling R.I.P little Star, happy popcorning over the rainbow bridge x>>

The other two babies we called "Flash" and "Buddy". They are both doing fine and living happily together. Bundles of fun and so entertaining...popcoring away and sleeping together in their hammock :)) They are almost 7 weeks old now and oh so handsome x)
