I am currently fostering a piggy for work. Fluffy was signed over for adoption and was believed to be in perfect health, however in his quarantine period he developed a large abcess on his stomach it was removed by the vets yesterday and cost £100. He has a large wound that needs to be cleaned reguarly and is having baytril twice a day. He will need his antibiotics for the next six weeks and should then be able to find a nice new home.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get him used to being handled again? He was extremely friendly before his surgery but doesn't want to be touched at all now.
I understand that he will be feeling sore and a little confused any advice will be appreciated.

poor little baby. all i can suggest is to take it slowly and you could always give him a treat when he comes out so he associates coming out with good things. the reason he doesn't want to be handled is he might be sore after the op. so remember to be very gentle, which i'm sure you already are anyway! let me know how you get on! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

:) I wouldn't worry too much about handling him. If you handle him and it hurts it'll make him less happy about being held. When Nibbles had her abdominal abcess I only brought her out for flushing the wound and meds. Like your boy she was very sore and I interacted with her through the cage so it was all on her terms :) Oh, and there was usually cucumber or Parsley involved- but no cuddles or holding, thats what Humans enjoy :)

Give him time and don't expect to be putting him up for rehoming at the end of 6 wheeks necessarily either. Gently does it :)

Thank you so much for your advice. I have renamed him Elton he seems a lot happier now and spend a lot of his time sat next to the cage divider talking to violet. He is the model patient when it comes to having his wound cleaned and taking his Baytril.
I will be adopting some friends for violet soon and will only have enough space to take piggies on a short time basis. I know that it is not practical to keep him so I have advertised him in the rescue section as I would dearly love to find him a home.

I once had a piggie who had fairly major surgery and we picked him up by encouraging him onto a towel and then wrapping the towel round to pick him up. His wound was on his underbelly, so it seemed to spread the load and he was very happy with the arrangement!

I hope Elton gets better soon and I wish you luck in rehoming him.
