Hi our guinea Yaya had a large lump on top of leg and around to the side which appeared and grew very quickly. Anyway had a sample sent off they said it was a fatty lump but as it was affecting her mobility we had it removed last Friday. Had check up Monday all ok by her second check up yesterday the space where the lump was had filled with fluid, vet drained it it was very bloody fluid.Today (next morning) fluid was back again to almost same size had it drained again but now 3 hours later it appears to be filling up again. I have tried to squeeze it myself but the hole must of closed up. Vet said we would need to keep going back until it stops filling up so looks like I'm off to vets again tomorrow. Is this normal and how long is this likely to go on?. She is still eating but not as active as normal she is on baytril 0.55 twice a day and metacam 0.45 once daily she weighs 1.2 she only a small guinea. What do I do? so far I have spent hundreds I know that shouldn't come into it but unfortunately in my case it does and it is distressing her a lot every time we go to vets.I cant take her every day for ever and I know its not just blood coming out when they drain but I am worried about how much blood she must be losing. Any advice would be really really appreciated. THANKS.

It is normal for a space left by a lump to become fluid filled & the fluid should eventually be reabsorbed by the body itself after a couple of weeks. I think it's early days yet but it certainly won't be forever. What was the lump in the end? If it was an abscess was it removed entirely (Capsule as well?) if not then it might have to be left open so it can drain & you would have to keep it open & clean it daily yourself until it healed. Tagging @furryfriends (TEAS) as she is expert at lump/abscess management :)

Thank you for your reply all they told me about the lump was it took an hour to remove was in 2 bits and looked like a fatty lump.

Completely normal. It's called a seroma.
Thanks for your reply do I need to get the lump drained daily and is it likely to cause yaya any problems. If I leave it will it absorb back into body ? Sorry for all the questions .

I have this with my young sow Willow at the moment - she had an abscess removed just over a week ago and has a seroma in the space left. It can be alarming, especially as you've gone through the worry of having had a piggie have something removed... and now it looks/feels like the op's failed or something has come back. I discussed this concern with my vet and he's confined the same as above - it'll eventually get reabsorbed, so as alarming as it can look, I'm not concerned.

It'd probably be good to have a chat the next time you're with the vet to see how long it needs to be drained and if/when it might be best to leave to 'naturally' resolve.

The abscess was completely removed and she was stitched up. I know that the other way of treating involves lancing/draining and stitching the wound to stay open, then aftercare at home. Every case is different, I guess the vet can't really tell until he does an op or biopsy.

Willow is doing well, we're back at the vets next Thursday when the vet may drain it or nay leave it to disperse of it's own accord.

Although it can be reabsorbed , please don't assume this is the case and still take her to the vet when it fills where they can decide if it should be left alone or not.

Please do not squeeze- a lump removal is not the same as having an abscess removed and left open. The wound is closed and trying to heal and squeezing will only aggravate the fluid build up.

Any sign of redness, hot to the touch or starts oozing please see a vet promptly.

Really hope it all calms down soon x

Thanks for your reply she has the vets again this morning I was asking if she really needed to keep going as it stresses her out so much but I will keep going until the vet tells me different. Thank you for the advice Emma

Mention to the vet that she gets stressed as they will take this into account.

Good luck x

Hi well we went to vets today and he is having second thoughts about draining it daily due to stress and protein loss so we left it today and are going to see what happens. He said the first day he drained 25ml of fluid second day 20 and third day 15 so it does seem to be getting less I just hope it re absorbs by itself now.I'm going to keep a close eye on her and measure lump etc fingers crossed.

I posted a couple of pics just to get opinions yaya had lump drained Friday Saturday and Sunday vet decided to see how it went and didn't drain yesterday and now the lump is massive again advice please ? Thanks for any help anyone can give

To be quite honest if its not troubling her l would leave well alone and just let nature heal it. It will gradually disappear. My piggy had one, it took months but eventually it went away. Obviously be guided by your vet who has the most experience

I agree, if it is drained regularly it will keep refilling. I don't have much experience of this type of lump though.

All I can advise is you keep in touch with the vet regularly, even start measuring it one side to the next over the top and keep your vet up to date that way and they can decide when they want her back for anymore treatment.

It's one of these things that you will need to persevere with vet contact until they are happy and of course you and your piggy are too x
