My previous thread is below regarding the neutering of my boar...

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31852

He is eating very small amounts now so I am still supplementing him with Supreme Science Recovery (same as Critical Care) and giving Avipro Plus also. (BOTH DISOLVED IN WATER)

I have also been syringing a little extra fluids (water) as he isn't drinking and isn't eating any vedge (just nibbling at hay and dried food)

So my question is, Do I NEED to give the extra water or will he be getting enough fluids from Science Recovery and Avipro Plus?

Also, Just a thought, can I disolve the Science Recovery and Avipro Plus together? I can't see why not but just checking.

Yes, you can mix the Science Recovery and Avipro Plus. Is he on any antibiotics? If so, do you syringe feed him right after giving the ABs? If you do, then it's best to hold the Avipro off until a couple of hours after dosing with the ABs. If he's not on any meds, or if you don't syringe feed at the same time as medicating, then there's no problem mixing the Avipro in with the Recovery.

I do think he does need some plain water just the same as any pig does - aim for at least 5ml at each feed. I find the easiest way to get water down them is to give it in between mouthfuls of food.

The optimal water intake is 40ml a day, but many pigs don't drink this amount normally, as they apparently find they are getting enough water from their veg.

thank you thats a great help.

he was given antibiotics at the time of the surgery but was not sent home with any so I'm just trying to play catch up with his sloppy poops now!

I'll continue giving him plain water also, thanks! As you say, he doesn't drink much from the bottle anyway. I've also got a bowl of fresh water in with him in case he's happier sipping from that at the moment. I was just concerned that he wasn't getting enough fluids because, as you say they usually get it from their veg which he isn't eating much of.

He's still not completely happy yet I don't think and he's had problems pooping, I've had to help him ease them out. I presume because they are so soft. The vet seemed happy with his progress though despite all these things when I saw her yesterday and we are back on Monday.
