Following on from the fabulous thread about the warmer weather I am now completely neurotic about flystrike mallethead even though my piggies live inside!

Is there any way of checking for symptoms or are there none before the maggot stage? I have done everything recommended but would like to know if there's anything else I should be keeping an eye out for.

I'm afraid I really don't know about checking for symptoms, but...

clean the litter areas of your cage daily
use pet-safe fly killer in your piggy room (I use a vapona window patch which is pet safe)
check piggies twice weekly for smelly bottoms

I also sprinkle citronella oil on top of their wooden hidies. Can you buy some citronella oil (from Holland and Barrett) and put some drops on a tissue on a saucer near their cage? It is very strong (as strong and hazardous as bleach) and may strip paint so be careful with it!

Just been on gorgeous guineas website and they do something called bugs be gone, it is a powder that you sprinkle on them that deters flys etc. worth a look.

Could you drape a fly net actually over the cage. Piggies may nibble though if they could get at it. xx
