You may have noticed from some recent threads that some of us newbie guinea pig owners are wanting advice on how to maintain a healthy, varied diet for our piggies. The sticky is a very useful list of foods but I was wondering whether anyone has written or is willing to write an example of a food diary for us novices to follow.

What a fab idea x

A rough idea of Sam and Frodo's diary would be

Day 1: Morning - 1 stick of celery, cucumber (size varies depending how much we have but usually about 2 inches), babycorn (if we have any in), a handful of leaves, and a florette of broccoli each.

Evening - A slice of green pepper (cut into smaller pieces), cucumber (as above), a small amount of carrot (occasionally leave this out) and a small handful of leaves

Day 2: Morning - celery, cucumber and leaves (all as above), a couple of green beans each, and a couple of sprigs of coriander each

Evening - as day 1

I generally just rotate this routine as it works for my fussy boys! I've been trying to find alternatives to the babycorn and fine beans as I'd prefer not to give these as often as every other day however I can't find anything else they'll eat! So atm I just have the occasional break from these (usually when I've run out - I just give it a couple of days before I buy fresh stuff). I also give the occasional cherry tomato each within the morning meal (no more than twice a week) and occasional sprig of parsley or dill each as well. I am on the look out for some new things to add into their diet but they don't really like much and it's hard to find veg that'll keep long enough for it not to go to waste before we've got through it all - which is hard for things they're only allowed on occasion.

EDIT - I forgot to mention they get a bowl of pellets everyday (usually late afternoon/early evening depending when veggies have been given - we're not keeping to a very good routine at the moment unfortunately!). I have a small scoop so give them about 2 scoops worth. They also have unlimited hay which I put in a pile for them to play in as well - they love it!

Ok I'm a newbie only had my babies since Saturday. At the moment i am trying them on one fruit or veg twice a day so i can figure out what they like.
They have unlimited hay and nuggets.
Sunday morning i gave them yellow pepper they didnt touch it. Then the afternoon they had apple.
Today i fed them yellow pepper (tried again.. They ate it) with carrots then the afternoon they had salad and tomotoes.

have bell pepper this morning and cucumber.teatime they had celery and leaves.Tomorrow cucumber and leaves and tea will be bell pepper and broccoli.Don't know about Wednesday as haven't bought them yet. They get cucumber and bell pepper every day, unlimited hay and a bowl of nuggets between four of them. They get baby sweet corn and green beans and parsley and Apple and tomato now and then.Odd bits of cauli and leaves

Thanks everyone It's really helping to see what you are all doing. Keep those food diaries coming - the more the merrier! :D
