Hello

Looking advice

My poor Garfield has a sore patch of urine scald on her bum. She has a big yellow patch on the hair on her bum (about the size of a 50p piece), and a bald patch in the centre (a little smaller then a 20p piece). It seems to have happened very quickly - the yellow patch has been gradually growing yellower for a couple of weeks, but I've only noticed the bald patch tonight.

Her hutch buddy is fine - he's very white, with a very clean bum. Garfield is an old girl whose favourite spot is her hay tray. It is lined with newspaper and changed twice a day. But she is an old girl, she pees a lot and doesn't move more then she has too. I'll be putting a 2nd tray in in the morning - hoping she will move between the two.

Was wondering about her diet too. Are there any foods that make urine more acidic (or alkaline? can't remember)

Bless her! Excessive passage of urine usually leads to urine scalding. I suggest that you try more absorbent bedding, and avoid foodstuffs that act as a diuretic (e.g. dandelions). The urine scalding can be treated and the affected area can be protected. However, I would advise a visit to your veterinary practice to ensure that there is not an underlying issue.

Back to the vets tomorrow then, darnit, had just managed 2 months without a vets visit, I knew this run of luck wouldn't hold rolleyes

Both receptionists at the vets recognise my voice on the phone before i tell them who i am :( Sometimes they can even tell me which pet I'm making an appointment for 8...

Before xmas i had a piggie with a bad chest, a hamster with a sore eye, another hamster group with a skin problem, and Garfield got her lumps and bumps checked. Over Xmas i had 2 rats with breast cancer operated on, and a 3rd rat treated for discomfort as she was too unwell to be operated on. Just after xmas we got out cat - she has a very bad eye, so we visited the vet twice a week for a few weeks, then once a week for a while. Also got the dog vaccinated and another lump and bump check for Garfield somewhere along that timeline.

Those two months were lovely 8...

As can my veterinary practice. The first time it occured, I realised I visit my practice too often.

I am sorry that you have been experiencing a difficult time with your companions of late, Redd1800. However, I am sure that your companions appreciate your dedication, even if they do not always show it, and realise how much they are loved. I do hope all goes well tomorrow with Garfield.

I agree with the above lines of thought as to the cause of the urine scald. To actually treat the urine scald, Bepanthen is the ideal cream to soothe and protect the skin.

It's tough when you've had a bad run of luck with your pets, I do understand the feeling and it's very exhausting!

I have some bepanthan, must go apply, Thanks Laura :)

Vets visit went well. He checked for stones and any other blockages in the bladder, injected a first dose of baytril and gave me enough to give her by mouth for the rest of the week - I have a stock of probiotics for her. He was very thorough - checked her feet, legs, eyes, ears and teeth as well as the sore bum.
