Hi All

We have a 4 week old (Oreo) currently bonding with our older pig, Red. We feed our pigs on Gerty Guinea plus veggies n treats, but I've read today that lots of people seem to dislike GG.

I have been reading about food and the Oxbow pellets seem to be a top rater, but there seems to be an age limit on the more adult feed. What should we feed our boys so that we don't muck up Oreo's growing digestive system and Red also gets the nutrients he needs?

Also, we have tended to feed our pigs in the past with broccoli and carrot, along with lettuce and cabbage. Not really mixing up the veggie too much, but again reading the sticky's I think we need to mix things up much more.

I have read lots of posts now, but it doesn't suggest how much of each type to give...

Also, my pigs will totally not touch peppers. Broccoli they love, along with carrots and they are lettuce fiends. Whilst not full of lots of nutrients, I think lettuce holds a lot of fluid so I'm happy feeding that to them.

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome!

Feed them on the adult pellets. My own youngsters have been perfectly fine on adult food, living with a big group of piggies of all ages; I just upped the amount of pellets slightly during the time they were still growing fast and reduced it to normal once the weekly growth rate dropped. The extra amounts needed by youngsters are in reality rather small!

The ideal diet consists of:
- unlimited hay (should make up to 80% of the daily food intake).
- 50g/1 cupful of a mix of fresh veg per piggy - try to vary broccoli with fresh herbs like coriander (which they can have daily); parsley, dill, mint, fennel and basil, (which they shouldn't) for added vitamin C and minerals. For extra calcium, feed the little one more on the stem and the old boy on the florets of broccoli; that should do the trick. There are other veg that are medium high in vitamin C like cabbages for instance, which will also contribute to the overall amount of vitamin C you are providing, don't forget that!
- unlimited pellets for fast growing youngsters - and it does NOT have to be young piggy ones! Pellets both contain protein, calcium and vitamin C; by giving more to a growing piggy you already cover the extra need. Reduce the amount gradually once the weekly growth rate is slowing down. Please weigh your piggies weekly throughout their lives - it is a good way to monitor their health and catch any ongoing problems early on.
- fresh water daily; no additives.

I hope that that helps you.

Thanks very muich Wiebke, appreciated.

I shall go and get some coriander today. I assume they can eat the stalk and leaves, so if I get this from Tesco this is okay?

Also, it looks like the Oxbow range are American? If so, is there a retailer near Bristol or is online the best way of buying this?

I give my two adult and they do just fine. I give them the timothy and alfalfa kibble twice a week as a treat.
