Hi, I was just wondering whether food requirements change when the guinea pigs are able to go out into runs on grass in the better weather. Do they still need as much hay and green veg? I think I read somewhere that it is best to get them used to fresh grass gradually - so not too much time in the outdoor run at first. Is it worth cutting some grass now Spring is almost here and the grass is starting to grow again, then feeding it to them in small quantities to get them used to grass? What do you do?

Yes,they still need plenty of hay to keep the teeth worn down, and veggies for the vitimins.Put them on the grass for a short time initially, then gradualy increase the time.I love to see my pigs popcorn when they go on the grass for the lst time in the spring.Soon now I hope, tho it is still too cold and wet at the moment. Mary

Thanks for your reply. I'm really looking forward to getting them out.

Shaz! :o What are you like?! LOL

Roll on the warmer weather when my piggies can go out too! The garden a bit too wet and muddy at the moment!

I always give mine Hay and the dried food in the run with a couple water bottles for them. Veggies I give them at night on warm summer days veg goes yukky really quick.

Hi Kay, You are not ignorant, you have just not heard the expression before.I only heard it 2 years ago and I have been keeping piggies for a very long time. The expression just refers to the little jump up and down that excited piggies do.I am sure you have seen your pigs do this. They sort of bounce just like popcorn.,hence the expression.Mine have been doing this today as they are out on the grass for the first time this year.It has been too cold and wet untill now.My sows seem to popcorn more than the boys, perhaps it is a girlie thing!.
