Which do you think is the best brand of food.

I'm getting a baby piggy soon and I'm so confused on which food would be best for him?

Can any one help me please?

Thanks, Louise

It's hard to say really because what might be good for him might be a food he won't eat. I have eight piggies and they are so damn fussy it's unbelieveable. I have been feeding them Gerty guinea carrot and cranberry which they sort of like but don't empty their bowls but I have tried the pellet type foods but they all seem to hate them so the muesli foods are the only ones I am going to buy in future. Tesco do a museli food for £3.19 a bag which seems okay and mine seemed to like it - its in a purple bag. Gerty guinea is far too expensive at the moment so I don't think I will be buying it again. Wagg guinea pig crunch is not so expensive. Although with one piggy a small bag will last you all week or longer so won't be as expensive as feeding 8 piggies.:)) I would just try different foods and see which one he likes best - its all trial and error really.:))

I think you will get many different answers.

For me I give them both Supa Guinea Excel and Mr Johnson's Supreme muesli - they like to chop and change throughout the day.

I know that a lot of people don't like muesli, as their piggies eat selectively. So I would definitely recommend Supa Guinea Excel as first choice.

Mine are on Science Selective so that they can't selectively feed on it, but I supplement that with Tesco purple bag for variety.

Yeap, check out some free samples and see what your piggies think.
However, it might be best to find out what your new piggy has been fed on so that he doesn't have too many changes all at once. You know, new home and new food. Keep feeding that for a little while then introduce something different if you want to.

When are you getting your little one?

I agree with the muesli idea. Mine were started on that and they only eat what they like. I get the PAH brand because, like many, I have tried several brands, and that's the one where they waste the least. It seems, however, that they systematically leave (whatever brand) the suposedly 'good' colourful pellets. They'll eat the crushed vegetables, seeds, etc but I'm always left with those red flower look-alike pellets.

I found that the Wilko muesli was quite popular (it has alphalpha in it, I think) but it posed 2 major problems, 1 the bags are small and I haven't got much storage around the place and if you know what shopping in Birkenhead is like, you'll understand why I wanted to keep my trips to Wilko as rare as poss, and 2 I had to throw a full bag out (I had stored it as indicated) because the contents had gone mouldy before I opened it. Maybe I was just unlucky... :(

I also tried to gradually introduce more pellets, but I have stopped because I aways throw most of it in the bin. Guinea pigs are fussy! grrrr

The bottom line is that any change of food has to be gradual (unless you have areally greedy animal that will eat anything) because it can cause stress, loss of apetite and weight loss too... So, I would follow Millie's Mommy's advice and find out if poss what your litlun used to be fed prior to the move.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hopefully in about 2 to 3 week.
Thank you everyone for your advice
